Dzhabrail Yamadayev was a former Chechen rebel field commander, and then the commander of Chechen GRU Spetznaz unit and deputy military commandant of Chechnya.

Life

Dzhabrail Yamadayev was one of Chechnya's best-known and influential figures. During the First Chechen War the Yamadayev brothers fought against the Russian troops and enjoyed great influence as field commanders. He held the rank of Ichkerian Brigadier General. [1]

Yamadayevs changed sides in 1999 and Dzhabrail became was the first commander of the ethnic Chechen Vostok battalion of the Russian Army special forces.

Death

On March 5 2003, Dzhabrail Yamadayev was killed along with his bodyguards in his own house in the village of Dyshne-Vedeno by a bomb planted under a couch that he slept on. The explosion was so powerful that the house was almost completely destroyed.

President Vladimir Putin awarded Dzhabrail a posthumous Hero of the Russian Federation medal, and his brother Sulim took over the unit.
