An opportunistic infection is an infection that would not develop in healthy people, but occurs because of immunodeficiency or immunosuppression (poor functioning or suppressed immune system). It complicates states such as AIDS (in which these illnesses are often diagnostic, and hence are called AIDS defining illnesses) and chemotherapy.
