The biggest surprise in qualifying on the Saturday was [[Giancarlo Fisichella]] He managed to put his car up into third place only behind the two [[Team McLaren|McLaren]]-[[Mercedes-Benz|Mercedes]]. For a brief time during qualifying, Giancarlo was actually quickest, before seeing his time bettered by the McLaren's. Another suprise on the Saturday was [[Michael Schumacher]]. Michael, challenger for the world championship qualified fourth which was a big disappointment for the thousand of Italian fans that traveled to [[Monaco]] for the race.

In the early stages the two [[Team McLaren|McLaren]]-[[Mercedes-Benz|Mercedes]] pull ahead and net 12 fastest laps between them from laps 4 to 12. The two cars touch, and the [[Scuderia Ferrari|Ferrari]] is damaged. Michael goes in to pit for repairs, and he eventually comes out, and is three laps down on the leader [[Mika Häkkinen]].

However five laps from the end [[Jean Alesi]] experiences gearbox problems, and he is forced to pull out of the race. On the last lap, still trying desperately to gain as many places as possible, [[Michael Schumacher]] slides in the port chicane and hits [[Pedro Diniz]]. This second accident breaks his front wing, and Michael finally ends up two laps in tenth place, and does not gain any points.

The 1998 Monaco Grand Prix was a Formula One held at Monaco on May 24, 1998. The race was won by Mika Häkkinen, and was his fourth win of the seaason.

Qualifying Summary
