The 2007 Chinese export confidence crisis refers to a series of product recalls and import bans initiated by the product safety institutions of the United States and European Union against products manufactured in and exported from the People's Republic of China because of numerous consumer safety issues claimed from the importing nations. Events included in the export confidence crisis include recalls on consumer goods such as pet food, toys, toothpaste, and a ban on certain types of seafood. Also included are reports on the poor crash safety of Chinese automobiles, slated to enter the American and European markets in 2008. This has created adverse consequences for the confidence in the safety and quality of Chinese manufactured goods in the global economy.

In June of 2007, toy maker RC2 Corp recalled several wooden based toys from its Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway product line due to concerns in lead levels in its paint.[1]
Hasbro Recall
In July, Hasbro Inc. recalled Chinese-made Easy Bake ovens, marking the second time the iconic toy had been recalled this year.
Mattel Recall
August 1, 2007 Mattel recalled Sesame Street's Big Bird and Elmo, and Nickelodeon's Dora the Explorer for lead levels in paint.[2] August 14, 2007, additional recalls from products made in china include: Polypockets Toy produced before November 2006, 600,000 Barbie and tanner play sets, one million doggie daycare, and Batman toys due to exposed magnets and is offering replacements. Sarge Diecast toys from the pixar movie Cars (movie) due to Lead paint concerns.[3]
Aftermath of Mattel Recall
Zhang Shuhong, who co-owned the Lee Der Toy Company, which made a number of toys for Mattel Sesame Street's Big Bird and Elmo, and Nickelodeon's Dora the Explorer; had committed suicide at his factory on August 11, 2007, according to authorities.[4]
