The Mercat is the main shopping centre in the centre of Kirkcaldy, the largest town in Fife, Scotland. It opened in 1973 as a small local shopping arcade.

Extensions

In 1986, an extension to enlarge the shopping centre was completed. The extension included a new two-storey car park with four entrances. The entrances include the one that connects to the swimming pool and to Thistle Street Car Park, and another connecting Marks and Spencer, Boots, and Bhs to the shopping centre. Since construction, one of the entrances has been closed. A new logo of the trademark red "M" was also unveiled.

A further reburbishment programme on The Mercat was completed in 1998. This included the replacement of dark panels with clear white ones, and a new logo (still in use,) which consists of a red and blue seagull. As well, three new units, including the first Woolworths store in the town for 19 years, replaced the former Tesco unit.

Future Prospals

A plan to develop on an area adjacent to The Mercat, backed by former First Minister, Jack McConnell[citation needed] is being seriously considered. This plan would entail building a multiplex cinema, a hotel, and residential apartments between Tolbooth and Charlotte Streets.

Another reburbishment plan, or at least an extension over The Mercat and Thistle Street Car Park, is currently waiting for approval. [1]

The Mercat Car Park

The Mercat Car Park, situated on Tolbooth Street, has restricted 9-6 weekdays parking and a free Sunday parking policy.

The Car Park also has a shopmobility unit in a basement compartment on the second floor, which has succumbed to flooding recently.

Current Stores

The main anchor stores in the shopping centre are Marks and Spencer, and BHS, plus a large Woolworths store and a two-storey TK Maxx.

Other main stores include Boots, The Carphone Warehouse, HMV, The Present Shop, Clinton Cards, BB's Coffee and Muffins, and Superdrug.

There also used to be a small shopping mall known as The Forum Centre which included a newsagents, a joke shop and a food court which closed in 2000.
