Box.net was founded by Aaron Levie in 2005 as a college business project, and launched officially in March 2006.[1] Box.net is based in Palo Alto, California, United States.

In 2007, Box.net was annouced as one of the WebWare 100 Award winners in the "Data" category.[2] It was also chosen by AlwaysOn as one of the "AO 100 Top Private Companies" for 2007.[3]
