Saturday Night Live aired its first season during the 1975 - 1976 television season on NBC. At the time, NBC was airing reruns of "The Tonight Show with Johny Carson" on Saturdays, but Johnny Carson wanted to have new programming on. They hired Lorne Michaels to be the executive producer of a late-night comedy/variety television seres. Lorne wanted to call this show, Saturday Night Live. But unfortunately, ABC already had a tv show on called Saturday Night Live with Howard Cosell. Lorne Michaels found cast members to be on his show, and he named them "The Not Ready For Prime Time Players" to mimick Cosell's "Prime-Time Players". The first season started on October 11, 1975 and ended on July 31, 1976.
