Burnout Paradise (formerly known as Burnout 5) is a video game in the Burnout series. It was announced on August 29, 2006 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The game will be set in the fictional 'Paradise City' and is to have an open world much like the multi-platform title Test Drive Unlimited.[1]
According to Alex Ward from developer Criterion Games, this game will be a "complete reinvention" of the Burnout series.[2] He also said "To create truly next-generation gameplay, we needed to create a truly next-generation game, from top to bottom." Records will now be kept on player's drivers licenses.
Alex Ward has also announced that the PlayStation Eye and the Xbox Live Vision camera will be used in Burnout Paradise for taking photos of your oppenents face when they crash and taking photos of you in a victory pose. These photos can then be saved to your hard drive.[3]
A new feature of Burnout Paradise is the ability to scope out a possible crash mode target and execute the crash. This seems to point to the idea of the 'open world'. Also, races are no longer specific lengths and types. Races are simply started by pulling up next to someone willing to race at the traffic lights. Obviously settings of the race would then be decided like where to, and various other settings. [1]
The game is expected to be released worldwide on PS3 and Xbox 360 in "Winter" as in late 2007/early 2008.
The damage system is also being reworked. Unlike the smash and roll system used in Burnout 3 and Burnout Revenge cars can be torn into several pieces and will form around objects as you crash into them. Cars will also scrunch around objects, overlap on themselves and, with enough force, tear apart completely in half.
Also, some trailers posted on Google have shown some customization of vehicles, which may mean a possibility of modifying cars to your liking.
It is unknown how the racing system will change. Things like Boost, Races, Roadrage, Eliminator, Traffic Checking, Crash Mode, Aftertouch, Crashbreaker, even the concept of using Takedowns to kill other racers, have not been discussed or confirmed for Burnout Paradise, and Criterion Games is not giving the public, or entertainment sites like IGN, a lot of information about it. However, Criterion has stated that Burnout Paradise will "still be Burnout."
