In the Harry Potter novels, by J. K. Rowling, the Order of the Phoenix is a fictional organisation founded by Albus Dumbledore to fight Lord Voldemort and his followers, the Death Eaters. The fifth Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, takes its title from this organisation.

Background Information

Prior to the start of the series, the Order functioned opposite of Voldemort's Death Eaters, and after his downfall it disbanded temporarily. Voldemort's reappearance in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire necessitated the reformation of the Order, and many members from its first roster (including Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and "Mad-Eye" Moody) returned, with new members being recruited as well.

Upon its reconstitution (during the break between books four and five), the Order set up headquarters at Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place, London, Sirius Black's family home. Dumbledore was the Secret-Keeper for the Order, meaning that the Order's headquarters at Grimmauld Place could only be revealed to others by Dumbledore. However after Dumbledore's death in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, everyone who knew the location became a Secret-Keeper themselves, meaning that they could reveal the location of the headquarters to whom they wanted. With Severus Snape knowing of its location and the Order thinking him to be on the side of Voldemort, the location was abandoned. The Order then made The Burrow their headquarters.Template:HP7

Role in the Books

Both during the events between the end of Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix, and throughout Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows, the Order was a major source of resistance against Voldemort, as the Ministry of Magic first refused to accept his return and were later unable to fight back in a productive way. Members of the Order defeated a group of Death Eaters at the Department of Mysteries near the end of Order of the Phoenix, and Order members were on patrol in Hogwarts on the night of the Death Eaters attack and Dumbledore's death in Half-Blood Prince.

In Deathly Hallows, the Order continues to lead the fight against Voldemort; their tasks include escorting Harry from The Dursley's home to The Burrow and fighting the Death Eaters at Hogwarts. As the order was created primarily to combat Voldemort and his Death Eaters, it is unknown if the Order stayed together after Voldemort's death, or whether it disbanded much like the original group did.

Relations With The Ministry

Although Dumbledore and the original members of the Order had expected the return of Lord Voldemort, members of the Ministry of Magic - most notably the Minister for Magic himself, Cornelius Fudge - were not convinced. Fudge believed that Dumbledore was spreading rumours in an attempt to undermine his authority as Minister for Magic, due to Dumbledore's general popularity and critique of Fudge's mishandling of certain situations in the first four books of the series.

Dumbledore, however, was vindicated when Lord Voldemort was finally seen in the Ministry headquarters itself. Fudge then had to admit that Dumbledore had been right, and largely because of the misinformation campaign he had directed against Dumbledore, Harry - and, to a degree, Voldemort - he was replaced as Minister for Magic by Rufus Scrimgeour, former head of the Auror Department, three days before the beginning of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Relations With Dumbledore's Army

During Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger create "Dumbledore's Army", the name of course was coined by Ginny Weasley. Umbridge refuses to teach the students any practical uses Defensive magic, so Harry and the gang get a group together, in the Hog's Head in Hogsmeade. They together decide that they want to learn magic that may be able to help them fight Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters. The relation with DA is basically, like they are the children's version of the Order of the Phoenix.

This is a list of the characters who were members of the Order of the Phoenix when it was first active, during Lord Voldemort's initial rise to power and several years prior to the main events of the Harry Potter series. Many of these characters later served as members of the revived Order.

Elphias Doge	Alive	Elderly wizard, close friend of Dumbledore since they met on their first day at Hogwarts. They remained friends throughout their lives until Dumbledore's death. He wrote Dumbledore's obituary for The Daily Prophet. Member of The Advance Guard. Went on to serve in the revived Order.
Aberforth Dumbledore	Alive	Bartender at The Hog's Head in Hogsmeade village. Assisted Harry in avoiding Death Eaters and entering Hogwarts in Deathly Hallows. He also helped defend the school during the Battle of Hogwarts, defeating Augustus Rookwood. Went on to serve in the revived Order.
Albus Dumbledore	Deceased	Killed by Severus Snape on top of the Astronomy Tower. It was later revealed that he had planned his death with Snape months earlier. Founded the original Order.
Benjy Fenwick	Deceased	Killed during the First War. Only "bits of him" were recovered.
Arabella Figg	Alive	Elderly woman, a Squib, who was enlisted by Dumbledore to watch over Harry during his entire childhood from her home in his neighborhood. She later told Harry that she regretted being mean to him when he visited her, but she had to keep the Dursleys from suspecting anything. Went on to serve in the revived Order.
Rubeus Hagrid	Alive	Care of Magical Creatures Teacher at Hogwarts, as well as Keeper of Keys and Grounds and Gamekeeper. Went on to serve in the revived Order. During the escape from the Dursleys, the real Harry and Hagrid were both nearly killed in the crash of the flying motorcycle. Near the end of the Deathly Hallows, Lord Voldemort ordered Hagrid to carry Harry's body to show the Hogwarts Defenders. Although Hagrid did not know it at the time, Harry was only playing dead.
Frank and Alice Longbottom	Incapacitated	Tortured into insanity by Bellatrix, Rabastan and Rodolphus Lestrange, and Barty Crouch Jr. after Voldemort was defeated.
Remus Lupin	Deceased	Also served in the revived Order. Killed by Antonin Dolohov in the Battle of Hogwarts.
Minerva McGonagall	Alive	Deputy Headmistress, Transfiguration professor, and head of Gryffindor House at Hogwarts. Also served in the revived Order. Extremely supportive of Dumbledore and his ideals. Helped defend the castle during the Second Battle of Hogwarts, and near the end of the battle fought Voldemort himself.

Peter Pettigrew	Deceased	Defected to the Death Eaters and betrayed James and Lily Potter to their deaths. Killed by his own magical hand, made by Voldemort, for showing mercy to Ron Weasley and Harry Potter.
Sturgis Podmore	Alive	Also served in the revived Order. Caught while on guard duty in the Ministry of Magic, sentenced to six months in Azkaban. Member of The Advance Guard.
James and Lily Potter	Deceased	Killed by Voldemort, who was seeking to kill their son Harry. Members of the original Order.
Nymphadora Tonks	Deceased	Killed by Bellatrix Lestrange. Married to Remus Lupin, and, shortly before her death, had a son named Ted Remus Lupin.
Fabian & Gideon Prewett	Deceased	Molly Weasley's brothers, killed during the First War. It took five Death Eaters (including Antonin Dolohov) to kill the two of them. Molly gave Harry Fabian's watch as his seventeenth birthday gift.
Severus Snape	Deceased	Went on to serve in the revived Order. Killed in the Battle of Hogwarts by Nagini, since Voldemort thought Snape was the rightful owner of the Elder Wand.
Emmeline Vance	Deceased	Killed during the Second War in her home close to 10 Downing Street, London. Her death generated a great deal of negative publicity both for the Ministry of Magic and the Muggle Prime Minister.
Arthur Weasley	Alive	Father of the Weasley family, bit by Nagini while guarding the door to the Department of Mysteries in Order of the Phoenix. Assisted the Order by helping contact people who would believe Dumbledore and Harry's story in Order of the Phoenix. Fought against Pius Thicknesse, alongside his son, Percy Weasley, in the Second Battle of Hogwarts.
Molly Weasley	Alive	Helped guard the Department of Mysteries in Order of the Phoenix; allowed the Order to use her house as headquarters in Deathly Hallows, and fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, after a Killing Curse sent by Bellatrix Lestrange closely missed her daughter, Ginny Weasley. Molly proceeded to kill Bellatrix Lestrange singlehandedly.

This is a list of the characters who joined the Order of the Phoenix when it was revived by Dumbledore between books four and five of the Harry Potter series.

Mundungus Fletcher	Alive	Thief and con man who Dumbledore once helped "out of a tight spot" and in return kept Dumbledore apprised of things he would hear from the lower walks and criminal element in the Wizarding World. After Sirius died, he stole most of the valuables from Number 12 Grimmauld Place - including what was revealed to be the Slytherin locket horcrux - and sold them, though he gave the locket to Dolores Umbridge in exchange for her not placing him under arrest. He was a reluctant part of the group sent to retrieve Harry in Deathly Hallows and panicked when Voldemort came towards him, Disapparating to an unknown location and leaving Alastor Moody to be killed by Lord Voldemort.
Hestia Jones	Alive	Helped hide the Dursleys from Voldemort, also was a member of The Advance Guard.
Kingsley Shacklebolt	Alive	An Auror, member of The Advance Guard, secretary/bodyguard for the Muggle Prime Minister, and part of the group that battled the Death Eaters in the Ministry at the end of Order of the Phoenix. Helped organize the Order members and students and fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, near the end of the battle fighting Voldemort himself. After Voldemort's death, he became acting Minister of Magic.
Nymphadora Tonks	Deceased	Killed by Bellatrix Lestrange during the Battle of Hogwarts.
Bill Weasley	Alive	Charm-breaker for Gringotts Wizarding Bank. Attacked and scarred by Fenrir Greyback during first Battle of Hogwarts. Son of Arthur and Molly, and brother to Percy, Charlie, Fred, George, Ron and Ginny. He married Fleur Delacour and was a go-between for the Order and the Goblin community. Fought in the Battle of Hogwarts.
Charlie Weasley	Alive	Assigned to recruit foreign Order Members during the summer of 1996. Also fought in the Battle of Hogwarts.
Fleur Weasley (formerly Delacour)	Alive	Helped take Harry from the Dursley's to The Burrow in Deathly Hallows, and fought in the Battle of Hogwarts.
Fred Weasley	Deceased	Killed during the Battle of Hogwarts in an explosion caused by Augustus Rookwood.

Characters that Assisted the Order

These are characters who helped the Order but were not official members. Many were underage during the events of the series and so not permitted to formally join the Order.

Although underage, he participated in several of the Order's confrontations with the Death Eaters: the Battle at the Department of Mysteries, the fight against Death Eaters in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and the escape from the Dursley's home. Dumbledore had left him a mission to destroy Voldemort's horcruxes, which he successfully completed with the help of Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Dumbledore himself, and Neville Longbottom. He also fought in the Battle of Hogwarts, facing and killing Voldemort.
Hermione Granger	Alive	Of age but probably not technically in the Order, she took part in several of the Order's confrontations with the Death Eaters: the Battle at the Department of Mysteries, and Harry's escape from the Dursley's home. In the Battle of Hogwarts she helped protect Lavender Brown from Fenrir Greyback, destroyed the Hufflepuff Cup horcrux, and fought against Bellatrix Lestrange with Luna Lovegood and Ginny Weasley.
Ron Weasley	Alive	Though also of age but probably not actually in the Order, he was part of the group that aided the Order during the Battle at the Department of Mysteries, the fight against Death Eaters in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Harry's escape from the Dursley's home. In the Battle of Hogwarts he used a Parseltongue phrase he had learned to open the Chamber of Secrets and retrieve some basilsk fangs to destroy the horcruxes, and later teamed up with Neville Longbottom to defeat the werewolf Fenrir Greyback.
Ginny Weasley	Alive	Although underage throughout the entire series of books, she nonetheless aided the Order several times, fighting in the Battle at the Department of Mysteries and the fight against Death Eaters in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. During the latter battle, she first fights alongside Nymphadora Tonks, then later, in the Battle of Hogwarts, joins Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood in battling Bellatrix Lestrange.
Percy Weasley	Alive	Percy had for years gone along with the ministry, saying that Voldemort had not returned. Finally, he realized that his family and "friends" had been right the whole time, not the ministry. Now realizing his faults, he assisted in the Battle of Hogwarts, covering his brother Fred's body from further damage after Fred was killed in battle.
Luna Lovegood	Alive	Luna takes part in the Battle at the Department of Mysteries ,then aids Harry in discovering the appearance of the Lost Diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw, which Voldemort had made into one of his horcruxes. In the Battle of Hogwarts, she, Hermione Granger and Ginny Weasley battle Bellatrix Lestrange.
Neville Longbottom	Alive	Took part in the Battle at the Department of Mysteries and the fight against Death Eaters in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. During the Battle of Hogwarts, he killed Voldemort's snake Nagini (which was the final horcrux) and joined forces with Ron Weasley to defeat Fenrir Greyback.
Filius Flitwick	Alive	Assisted in fortifying the castle from Death Eaters as well as defeating Antonin Dolohov.
Pomona Sprout	Alive	Assisted in fortifying the castle from Death Eaters.
Olympe Maxime	Alive	Accompanied Hagrid on his journey to the giants.
Ted Tonks	Deceased	Helped the Order hide Harry Potter from the Death Eaters when Harry was being evacuated from the Dursleys house. Later murdered by Snatchers, while being on the run from the Ministry due to the fact that he was a Muggle-born#Muggle-born.
Andromeda Tonks	Alive	Helped the Order hide Harry Potter from the Death Eaters when Harry was being evacuated from the Dursleys house. Later tortured for Harry's whereabouts.
Lee Jordan	Alive	Hosted Radio Show "Potterwatch", about Harry Potter and the real news, that Voldemort didn't want people to know. Alongside George Weasley, Lee defeated the Death Eater Yaxley.

Missions and Operations

The Advance Guard

• The purpose of The Advance Guard was to remove Harry Potter from 4 Privet Drive, after Lord Voldemort had returned. They flew into Surrey and removed him without incident.

Mission To The Giants

• Rubeus Hagrid and Olympe Maxime were asked by Dumbledore to go and find the giants. They were trying to befriend them and turn them over to the Order's side.

Securing The Hall of Prophecy

• The Order of the Phoenix, was trying to prevent Voldemort from getting the prophecy from the Department of Mysteries. The Order posted guards there all day and night long.

Creatures and Beings Loyal To The Order of the Phoenix

• Grawp, half-brother of Hagrid, is the only full-blooded giant that fights against Voldemort's forces during the Battle of Hogwarts.
• House Elves, Dobby and Kreacher in particular. Dobby is killed helping Harry, Ron, Hermione, and others escape from Malfoy Manor. Kreacher leads the Hogwarts house-elves during the Battle of Hogwarts, in the name of Harry and his beloved former master Regulus Black.
• Centaurs, after a few encouraging words from Hagrid, they finally assist the Hogwartians and the Order.
