As an East German, he spent the majority of his career racing as an amateur until the reunification of Germany allowed him to become professional with the Dutch Panasonic cycling team, one of the leading teams at the time. As a specialist sprinter, perhaps the highlight of his career was winning the maillot vert (Green jersey) in the 1990 Tour de France. Other career highlights included winning the Olympic road race in Seoul in 1988, a record 38 stage victories in the Peace Race, winning the Amstel Gold Race in 1992 and podium placings in the Paris-Roubaix.
