Bexley Grammar School, is a co-educational grammar school in Bexley, Northwest Kent/ South East London Border London. Students are admitted from the age of 11, into Year 7, with extra admittance into the Sixth Form in Year 12 at age 16, providing students have achieved sufficient grades at GCSE.
History
The school admitted its first pupils in September 1955. It was founded by Sir Edward Heath who was the local Member of Parliament at that time. Sir Edward attended the school's Golden Jubilee celebrations shortly before his death in 2005. A part of the school's building completed in 2000 is named the Heath Building after him. Bexley Grammar has been a Specialist Language College since September 2002.
School Curriculum
All students who join the School learn one foreign language, either French, German, Russian, Spanish or Japanese in Year 7. In Year 8 pupils begin a second foreign language out of those available, and continue to learn the two languages until GCSE. In addition to this, students study Latin from Year 7 up until Year 9, with the option of continuing to GCSE. Extra-curricular clubs provide opportunities for additional language learning with Chinese and Russian currently available. Language learning continues in the Sixth Form where students may opt for a taster course in a new language such as Chinese or Italian or for an accredited course. Courses in French and German for Business, GCSE Spanish and British Sign Language are currently available.
House System
On admission to the school, each student is assigned to one of the six houses: Collins house, Johnson house, Kirkman house, Mabbs house, Prothero house or Wellman house. Each house is named after a former member of senior staff that had a notable impact on the school. Within these houses, the students have weekly meetings and take part in interhouse competitions, such as football, hockey, a general knowledge quiz, drama and athletics. All six houses have a teacher assigned as "Head of House", who is in charge of organising the students for the competitions. The "Head of House" is assisted by several House Captains, selected from the Sixth Form students from the relevant house. However, as Wellman is still a relatively new house (having been created in 2003), there are no students in any year above Year 10, and all House Captains are volunteers from the other five houses. The House Captains are responsible for organising and preparing the teams for the competitions, and often officiate at the events themselves.
