Old Hall Comprehensive School was located in Kimberworth, Rotherham, United Kingdom. Originally built in the 1960s, it grew quickly and at the time of its closure it had around 130 staff members and around 1500 students from Years 7-11.
At its best its examination results in GCSEs and GNVQs were excellent, raising the bar for other local schools to achieve similarly. Led through possibly its most successful era by headteacher William Bainbridge, it still maintains an admirable level of ex-students going on to study at respected UK universities.
Many ex pupils will remember the temporary classrooms which actually remained there for many years. The Pink Palace is probably the most famous one which was then painted an unsightly green colour. Before the City Learning Centre was opened the school also had an eas and a west hall. The covered walkways were also a feature of the school which meant on wet days you may get wet as you moved around the school.
It was tradition in this school to hold a 'Long March' every year, organised by Mr Copley in which all pupils would be sponsered to walk around Rother Valley Country Park. Unfortunatly this tradition has not been continued, even though it was a very enjoyable event when all the school got together. The first people round were the first ones back and it meant half a day off school!
There were many great teachers which influenced the children of Old Hall Comprehensive School such as Mr Holmes (The colourblind science teacher) and Mr Maderaz (Excellent Maths teacher determined to get the best from pupils) . The school also suffered some great losses including Mrs Fawdry who was an excellent teacher and did a great job of making History fun.
The school ceased to exist under its old name as of September 2003 when it merged with Kimberworth School to form Winterhill School. The merge saw several incidents of gang violence as a result of the rivalry that had existed when the two schools were separate. A heavy police presence was maintained for a number of months.
The school had no 6th-form college attached to it but many of its students proceeded to study A-Levels and other further qualifications at Rotherham colleges.
