The University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) is an autonomous constituent university of the University of the Philippines System situated at the foot of Mount Makiling in Los Baños, Laguna. It was founded by renowned American botanist and agriculturist Edwin Copeland on March 6, 1909 as the College of Agriculture, one of the first two units of the University of the Philippines.[1]
UPLB has one of the largest campuses in the Philippines, and the largest constituent university of the University of the Philippines System in terms of land mass, with a total land area of 36 km², or roughly the size of the city of Manila. Several buildings at UPLB were designed by National Artist for Architecture Leandro Locsin.[2]
The University has the highest concentration of PhDs among all educational institutions in the Philippines[3] due to the numerous local and foreign research centers located here (Note: UP Diliman's College of Science, on the other hand, has the highest concentration of PhDs among all colleges in the country[4]).
UPLB has made significant contributions to science and technology research in the Philippines and abroad, and it continues to do so despite limited funding support from the government. As testament to this, at least 30 of the 87 members of the prestigious National Academy of Science and Technology have studied and/or taught at UPLB.[5] The University has likewise produced 11 of 29 national scientists.[6]
History
Centers of Excellence
Please see the talk page before editing.
As of March 2007, the Philippines' Commission on Higher Education (CHED) has designated[7][8] UPLB as a Center of Excellence in:
- College of Agriculture - Agriculture
- College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology - Agricultural Engineering (joint program with the College of Agriculture)
- Institute of Biological Sciences - Biology
- Institute of Chemistry - Chemistry
- College of Development Communication - Communication
- College of Forestry and Natural Resources - Forestry
- Institute of Computer Science - Information Technology
- Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Physics - Mathematics (also a Center of Development in Physics and Statistics)
- College of Veterinary Medicine - Veterinary Medicine.
Meanwhile, six research institutes of UPLB were recognized[9] as Centers of Excellence by virtue of Presidential Decree for their significant contributions to national development:
- Institute of Plant Breeding
- Institute of Food Science and Technology
- National Crop Protection Center
- National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BIOTECH-UPLB/UP-BIOTECH)
- Institute of Animal Science
- Farming Systems and Soil Resources Institute
The University has a total of 33 research institutes renowned in the region for their science and technology studies.
Data from the Professional Regulation Commission also show that UPLB is a consistent top performing school in all the board exams it participates in, with a passing rate usually averaging 90 percent or better. Specifically, these are in the fields of Agriculture, Agricultural Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Forestry, Nutrition and Veterinary Medicine.[10]
Because of these recognitions, CHED has designated the University as Zonal Research Center for Regions 4 (Calabarzon and Mimaropa) and 5 (Bicol).[11]
International Recognition
UPLB is one of only three schools in Asia that received institutional recognition in the Ramon Magsaysay Awards,[12] regarded as Asia's Nobel Prize. The UPLB College of Agriculture received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for International Understanding in 1977 for its pivotal role in the continent's development through agricultural research and education. The College is also home to the country's first and only Thomson Scientific/Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)-accredited journal,[13] The Philippine Agricultural Scientist.
The University likewise has research partnerships and student/faculty exchange programs with the Asian Development Bank,[14] Cornell University,[15] Yale University,[16] Purdue University[17]and Michigan State University,[18] among others.
UPLB is the center of biotechnology education and research in South East Asia. It is home to at least four international research and extension centers - the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), the APEC Center for Technology Exchange and Training for Small and Medium Enterprises (ACTETSME), the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEAMEO-SEARCA), and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Center for Biodiversity.
Philippine Research Institutions
Local institutions such as bureaus of the Department of Science and Technology and the Department of Agriculture are headquartered at UPLB. The Philippine Rice Research Institute and the Philippine Carabao Center also have offices at the University.
Media Production Locations
Due to its picturesque views and attractions, UPLB is a leading choice as a production venue for movies and television shows. Past productions include:
- Y Speak Live (episode on fraternities, sororities, and organizations shot during February Fair 2007; hosted by Mo Twister and Bianca Gonzales, Studio 23)
- Maalala Mo Kaya (episode starring Heart Evangelista and John Prats, ABS-CBN)
- T.G.I.S. (defunct series, Viva TV)
- Love Spell (episode starring Gerald Anderson, Kim Chiu, and Shaina Magdayao, ABS-CBN)
