The Bellamy Pirates (ベラミー海賊団, Beramī Kaizokudan) are fictional pirates from the anime and manga One Piece, led by Bellamy the Hyena.

The Bellamy Pirates are attempting to usher in a "New Age" where pirates don't search for dream treasures like the One Piece and instead focus on the treasures around them. According to Sarquiss, all of the Bellamy crew come from North Blue. They are looking for strong pirates to join their cause, and laugh at anyone still stuck in what they call the "Age of Dreams". The leader, Bellamy, is considered a big-time rookie. Or so he was until he encountered the series' protagonists, the Strawhat Pirates.

They were originally led by Donquixote Doflamingo, one of the 7 Shichibukai. He, like the rest of the crew, believes in the New Age.

Part in the Story

The Bellamy Pirates make their first appearance on the island of Jaya in Mock Town, a pirate-infested port. At this point in the series, Luffy, Zoro, and Nami were in town searching for information about the legendary Sky Island while the others waited on the ship, which brings them into conflict with Bellamy. According to Bellamy, he was going to see if Luffy was worthy of joining in on the New Age, but as soon as Nami asked for information about Sky Island, he rejected that notion, and instead taunted them with the rest of his crew. However, despite the taunting getting rather violent, Luffy and Zoro chose not to fight back, mirroring an action of Shanks' earlier in the series. After they left, Bellamy chose not to pursue them, thinking them to be weak.

However, as luck would have it, they would once again confront the Straw Hats. Bellamy hears about how Monteblanc Cricket had uncovered some gold, and as a result decides to take it from him, badly injuring him and The Saruyama Alliance in the process. This turns out to be a bad move, as Cricket was helping the Straw Hats go to Sky Island. Seeking revenge, Luffy runs back to town. At this point, the latest bounties come in, revealing Luffy's 100 million bounty and Zoro's 60 million bounty, but Bellamy concludes that they were fakes made to scare him. When Luffy and Bellamy fight, however, after shrugging off several of Bellamy's quick attacks, Luffy beats him in one punch, proving the accuracy of the bounty.

Later, after hearing of Bellamy's defeat, Donquixote Doflamingo comes to Mock Town and forces Sarquiss to kill him, claiming that he dishonored his flag.

Pirate Flag

The Bellamy Pirates bear two flags--one is Donquixote's flag, while the other is Bellamy's personal flag.

Donquixote's flag is a crossed-out smiley face with a wide grin showing teeth. Though Sarquiss has this tattooed on his chest, it is unknown if the other crewmembers have done the same.

Bellamy's flag is a pair of red lips against crossbones with the tongue sticking out.

Ship

The Bellamy pirates' ship, New Witch's Tongue, is a medium sized vessel. Its figure head is based on Doflamingos flag. It was only shown briefly and had no apparent special features.

Crew Information

Bellamy

Captain (55,000,000 beli bounty)

Bellamy (ベラミー, Beramī) is the captain of the crew and has a 55,000,000 Beli bounty. Bellamy earned his nickname from his trademark grin (which was most likely never seen again after his swift defeat by Luffy) and his reputation for scavenging riches from other pirates, much like a hyena scavenges its food. Bellamy's character is one that is arrogant, violent and vain. But significantly humbled when facing more powerful foes, since he revealed to his superior, who is a Shichibukai, that he only engages in fights that he knows he can win. This later led to his ultimate defeat handed to him by Monkey D. Luffy, whom Bellamy thought was weak. Bellamy and his pirate crew play a significant role in the Jaya Arc of the series. It would seem that his Devil Fruit power contributed greatly to his high bounty, which may explain why he tends to show off his abilities when fighting adversaries.

Later on, at the end of the Skypiea arc the true leader of the Bellamy Pirates, Donquixote Doflamingo, who is one of Shichibukai, returned to Jaya to kick him out of his crew and forced Sarquiss, the crew's first mate to attack and kill Bellamy "as a lesson," for disgracing his flag when Bellamy was beaten by Monkey D. Luffy.

Doflamingo's last words to Bellamy were as follows:

But you know Bellamy... this is what I like about you! Hahaha! The new era is almost upon us. Go do as you like. However... I don't need you on my side.

Trivia

  • Bellamy gets his name from Samuel Bellamy. Samuel Ballamy was a real pirate who sailed the seas in the early 1700s.[1]

Sarquiss

1st Mate (38,000,000 belli bounty)

The second mate of Bellamy the Hyena, Sarquiss (サーキース, Sākīsu) with a bounty of 38,000,000 for his head. Just like his captain, he strongly believes that a New Age is coming and laughs at anyone who mentioned their dreams. He is often seen with a woman on his side, Lily. He is nick-named 'Big Knife', due to his large dagger (it bears a strong resemblance to a massive kukri). After Luffy easily defeated Bellamy however, they were paid a visit by Donquixote Doflamingo who, with his power, supposedly forced Sarquiss to kill Bellamy. He is also notable for attempting to stop Luffy by unwisely challenging him into a fight after the latter recovered Cricket's stolen gold, but only cringed when the boy finally turned his attention to the remaining Bellamy Pirates, and that is why Blackbeard slammed his face hard on the ground later that night

In the English version of the PS2/Gamecube game One Piece Pirates' Carnival, Sarquiss has been named "Sirkees". The "Big Knife" nickname is added on. Before FUNimation got the dubbing rights for One Piece, 4kids was going to change Sarquiss' name to Carnaby Skeet.

Other Crewmates

While they are not named in the anime nor the manga, the names of Bellamy's crew appear in the One Piece Blue Data book. Below are some of the members of the crew who stood their ground after seeing Bellamy bested by Luffy, but did nothing whatsoever to prevent the Straw Hat from retrieving the gold they stole.

  • Ross(Patrick Seitz): Fighter. The one wearing a similar attire to Braham from Skypeia.
  • Eddy: Navigator. He's the bespectacled "pretty boy" of the Bellamy Pirates who determined the location of the Saruyama Alliance base for Bellamy. It was he who reprimanded Sarquiss from taking on Luffy in the anime. His status as the navigator is evident by the Log Pose on his right wrist.
  • Huett: Cook.
  • Rivers: Sniper. The one wearing the hat with long ear-flaps. In the manga, it was he who stopped Sarquiss from going after Luffy and not Eddy.
  • Mani: Female fighter. The curly-haired black-skinned beauty who was first seen side-by-side with Rivers. Despite being a "fighter", she, like the rest of the crew did nothing to stop Luffy.
  • Myure: Doctor. The curvy female wearing a tight-fitting yellow outfit and crosses decorated on her boots. Being the crews physician, she presumably made the bandage aroung Bellamy's head that was seen when Donquixote Doflamingo came to Jaya to punish him. It is unknown how advanced her medical skills are.
  • Lily (Trina Nishimura): She goes around with Sarquiss.

Note: These names are translated directly from Japanese and might not be the correct romanizations.

Crew Strength

Despite high confidence, the crew is relatively weak. The only notable fighters are Bellamy and Sarquiss, with Bellamy being the most skilled. They hide their true incompetence by beating other pirates with lesser strength in the hopes that by doing so, they will get stronger. It seems that their stategy for attacking other pirates revolves around Bellamy and Sarquiss acting as the main attacking force while their weaker members deal with the already-beaten adversaries in their wake. And to impress others, they usually do it with bravado in public. This way of encountering others blinded them from recognizing that Luffy and Zoro are actually several calibres away from their level. The fact that Luffy defeated their strongest member, Bellamy, without the use of his Devil Fruit powers is only proof of the crew's weakness. Interestingly, while they claim to recruit only the strongest of the strong pirates for their cause, all they managed to gather so far were pirates of mediocre skill, who won't even stand up to themselves after they saw Bellamy beaten to the ground, running away instead

Other Information

It appears Donquixote Doflamingo has some pride in his flag and was not happy about Bellamy losing while serving under it. While it remains unknown what will happen next it is almost certain Donquixote Doflamingo will appear later on, though whether or not Bellamy's crew will accompany him is another question.

A version of Donquixote's flag that is not crossed out appears on the packets of Whitebeard's I.V. It has yet to be seen if there is any significance to this. One theory is that the grinning smily face represents the Age of Dreams, possibly referring to how Gold Roger grinned at his execution, which is why it is crossed out on his flag.
