Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep (キングダム ハーツ バース バイ スリープ, Kingudamu Hātsu Bāsu bai Surīpu) is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square Enix for the PlayStation Portable. It is an installment in the best-selling Kingdom Hearts series that focuses on Terra, Ven, and Aqua, characters introduced in Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix. Many previously unexplained elements from the original Kingdom Hearts trilogy are present. The game was announced at the 2007 Tokyo Game Show. Currently the title is only confirmed for a Japanese release, though its likely it will be released in other regions.

Gameplay

Birth by Sleep is a single player Action role-playing game which features melee combat.[3] The gameplay is believed to have gameplay similar to the action-RPG style of the previous games in the series.[4] Tetsuya Nomura has stated that the gameplay will be similar to Kingdom Hearts Re:Chain of Memories in that decks will be used.[2][5] The game will be divided into three scenarios,[1] with each scenario having different styles of gameplay based on the personalities and abilities of the three main characters.[2] Nomura has also stated that players can play from of the three scenarios and possibly stop mid-way through one scenario to begin another.[5] The developers also plan to add multiplayer components and a new character growth system.[2]

Plot

Birth by Sleep focuses on the story of Keyblade masters before Sora from the original Kingdom Hearts game[6] and is a prequel, taking place ten years before the original Kingdom Hearts.[7] Nomura has stated that though there are three scenarios, there is not one singularly important scenario or character, but that the main theme is Ven's identity.[5] It is also believed to be connected to the unlockable trailers at the end of Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix.[8] The story revolves around three Keyblade apprentices in search of a missing Keyblade master, Master Xehanort,[1] and his apprentice.[9] Their disappearance foreshadows a great disaster.[1] The game will take place entirely in Disney-themed worlds, both new and old, and will reflect the time difference between this game and the previous Kingdom Hearts games. [5]

Characters

Like previous Kingdom Hearts titles, Birth by Sleep will feature numerous Disney characters.[4] Confirmed characters include Terra, Aqua and Ven,[2][9] King Mickey,[3] Goofy,[5]and Master Xehanort and his apprentice.[1]

Development

Birth by Sleep is named after the unlockable trailer at the of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix.[2] It was announced alongside Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts coded at the Tokyo Game Show on September 20, 2007. A trailer was shown in the Square Enix "Closed Mega Theater", a photo-prohibited theater presenting 40 minutes of trailers.[8][10] Developed for the PlayStation Portable, the game is being directed by Tetsuya Nomura and co-directed by Tai Yasue.[1] Director Tetsuya Nomura mentioned earlier in 2007 that he wanted to do a spin-off Kingdom Hearts game on a mobile platform and that he wanted the game to play slightly different than the other titles already in the series.[11] Birth by Sleep will use the same graphical engine as Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII.[12] The development of the game began before the release of Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix+.[2][5] Though the plot was completed, development was halted due to development of Re:Chain of Memories.[2] Of the three new games announced, Birth by Sleep was the first one to begin development, though Nomura speculates it will be the last one released.[5]
