Participation in leisure activities and leisure satisfaction are inextricably linked to an individual's health. Leisure satisfaction is the positive perceptions or feelings that an individual forms, elicits and gains as a result of engaging in leisure activities and choices. What can contribute to leisure satisfaction is to what degree an individual is currently satisfied with their leisure experiences and activities. An individual might attain positive feelings of contentment and happiness that result from the satisfaction of needs.(Beard & Ragheb, 1980).
Benefits of Leisure
There are six effects or benefits of leisure satisfaction that can be derived from leisure particpation.. These effects of leisure are summarized briefly as follows: 1) Psychological - express one’s individuality, fulfill needs for self-actualization, utilize abilities, and participate in activities that are challenging. 2) Educational – individuals seek intellectual stimulation, opportunities for new experiences, and learn new things about their surroundings and themselves. 3) Social – individuals participate in activities with groups, identify with those groups, meet with friends, and further the development of freely chosen relationships. 4) Relaxational – individuals engage in activities that are restorative, allow time for rest and recuperation, and allow time for relief from stresses from work and pressures from society and life. 5) Physiological – individuals participate in leisure activities that enhance physical fitness, increase cardiovascular health, and increase energy. 6) Aesthetic – engaging in activities where surroundings are well designed and beautiful, making leisure experiences more interesting and pleasurable
