The Austin City Limits Music Festival is an annual three-day music and art festival in Austin, Texas's Zilker Park. The Festival brings together more than 130 bands on eight stages, including rock, country, folk, indie, Americana, hip-hop, reggae, and bluegrass, and attracts a crowd of about 65,000 visitors each day. The festival is produced by C3 Presents, who also co-produce the Lollapalooza and Big State festivals.

In a very short time the Austin City Limits Music Festival joined Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Coachella as the United States’ premier rock festivals.

Relationship to television series

The historic Austin City Limits television series focused for many years on Texas singer/songwriters, country and folk performers, and instrument specialists. That is changing as the award-winning television series now resembles the Festival lineup and spotlights artists of every musical genre from rhythm and blues to rock, jazz, and alternative. Performers who have appeared on both the PBS show and the Festival in recent years have included Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Coldplay, Modest Mouse, The Flaming Lips, Jack Johnson, Etta James, Wilco, Trey Anastasio, Franz Ferdinand, John Prine, Keith Urban, Ben Harper, Elvis Costello, Nickel Creek, Cat Power, Tori Amos, The Arcade Fire, Norah Jones, The Shins, Corrine Bailey Rae, The Pixies, Bright Eyes with My Morning Jacket, Ozomatli, Grupo Fantasma, and many more. Some of the people just mentioned are TX artists.

Festival policies

Concert goers that have three day pass wristbands can leave and re-enter at any time. Those that have one day passes cannot re-enter. Allowed items include: Two 32oz sealed water bottles, umbrellas, folding chairs(there is a restriction on how close you can move the chairs to the stage). There isn't any car parking near the festival. Most concert goers park downtown and then take a free shuttle that is located at Republic square. Bike parking is available but you must provide your own locks. Outside food isn't allowed inside the concert. They do have vendors inside that provide, food and alcohol.

Weather

Although the average high in Austin for the last two weeks of September is 88 degrees Fahrenheit, recently the event has endured above average temperatures and humidity. The highs for 2004 during the festival were 96, 96, and 93. In 2005 the highs were 98, 99, and 108. Temperatures reached 98, 99, and 90 in 2006. ACL has worked with the City of Austin to install a massive irrigation system to eliminate dust concerns during the Festival. In 2006 they also targeted dust patches by putting mulch on them, ending almost all of the dust problems. Tents and other stations have been set up and equipped with fan misters. Organizers do not want to move the festival into October due to conflicts with hotel room availability on UT football weekends, increased chance of rain, and the reduced chance of booking bands on summer tour. The festival does allow attendees to bring 2 factory sealed water bottles, and has reasonably priced food and drinks compared to other festivals.

Location advantages

Austin City Limits is the must-see event in Texas for rock, indie, blues, world/ethnic contemporary and traditional, reggae, eclectic, fusion, electronic, soul, folk/Americana and almost all other music fans. Major metropolitan areas Dallas, San Antonio and Houston are each within a 3 hour drive of Austin and have no similar events. After selling 75,000 tickets on Saturday in 2004, organizers capped attendance at 65,000 for 2005 (the cap was met on Saturday and Sunday). While a trip to Bonnaroo or the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival most likely involves camping, Austin has plentiful cheap hotel rooms and Zilker Park is in the middle of the city, so people can visit the Nature City and its gardens, the botanical gardens, Barton Springs pool to swim/have heat relief and relax, hike and bike trail, river - and rent a canoe or kayak or float on a raft or other boat. There are also beach volley ball courts and a fun rock formation in Zilker park that many people enjoy during the festival when they are converted to open tents with fans and misters to provide heat relief and a place to lounge/relax.

The fest is also near downtown Austin, where many artists perform after-shows after they play at the fest and at venues and places - all diverse where at some people can play chess and be intellectual, at other's dance, see more music AND dance or just enjoy the music - and sit down, or stand, see visual art, hang out with friends/family, read, talk, party, participate in fun events, drink, eat from a variety of cuisines - some very fine local restaurants, be merry, etc. Also, Austin is a very friendly city; people are hospitable and so it's easy to find nice new friends or meet-up with loved ones who live in the city one normally wouldn't get to see.

2007

The 2007 Austin City Limits Music Festival occurred September 14, 15, 16 in Zilker Park. Several acts, including Amy Winehouse, The White Stripes, and Rodrigo y Gabriela cancelled their appearances at the festival due to health reasons, the later of the two on very short notice. The scheduled performance by Saturday headliner, The White Stripes, was replaced by moving already scheduled Muse into the headlining slot. Although competing with Arcade Fire for the first part of their set, many who went to see Muse consider it an epic ACL performance, and one of the best ACL headlining acts ever.

Other notable moments include Friday when a propane tank was ignited and a fire broke out in the service area, burning down two trailers and several port-o-potties. Four people who were working at the festival were injured, two of them seriously. A second fire broke out on the speaker stack at the AT&T stage during Bjork's set, but it was quickly extinguished and no injuries were reported.

Saturday during M.I.A.'s set, on request by the performer fans rushed the stage and were allowed to remain there for moments until security helped them down.

Sunday the festival came to a close with crowds of fans leaving shortly after the start of headliner Bob Dylan's set. This may be in part because Dylan was not filmed up close, making it difficult for the crowd to watch him perform.

The following artists performed at the festival:

Bob Dylan, Björk, The Killers, Wilco, Arcade Fire, Muse, My Morning Jacket, Queens of the Stone Age, Bloc Party, Arctic Monkeys, Gotan Project, Joss Stone, Damien Rice, Robert Earl Keen, Lucinda Williams, Spoon, Blue October, Indigo Girls, The Decemberists, Paolo Nutini, Regina Spektor, Crowded House, Common, Steve Earle, Ziggy Marley, Stephen Marley, Kaiser Chiefs, LCD Soundsystem, Devotchka, Augustana, Amos Lee, M.I.A., Ben Kweller, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Andrew Bird, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Pete Yorn, Ghostland Observatory, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Reverend Horton Heat, Butch Walker, Peter Bjorn and John, Sound Tribe Sector 9, Cold War Kids, Yo La Tengo, Joseph Arthur & The Lonely Astronauts, Zap Mama, Blonde Redhead, Eli Young Band, Aterciopelados, Heartless Bastards, Raul Malo, James Hunter, Mighty Clouds of Joy, Del McCoury Band, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Andy Palacio & the Garifima Collective, Asleep at the Wheel, Ryan Shaw, Will Hoge, The National, Beau Soleil, Midlake, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Railroad Earth, Dax Riggs, Sound Team, The Legendary Soul Stirrers, Charlie Musselwhite, JJ Grey & Mofro, Young Love, The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker, Ian Ball, The Little Ones, Manchester Orchestra, Patterson Hood, Billy Joe Shaver, Fionn Regan, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, John Ralston, The Broken West, Rose Hill Drive, Brandon Rhyder, Ocote Soul Sounds, Sara Hickman, Jon Dee Graham, Kevin Devine, Ike Reilly Assassination, Greyhounds, Guy Forsyth, Adam Hood, Cary Ann Hearst & The Gun Street Girls, The Jones Family Singers, The Gospel Silvertones, The Shields of Faith, Sylvia St. James, Jeffrey Steele, Amy Cook, Trent Summar & the New Row Mob, Back Door Slam, Mario Matteoli, Kara Grainger, One Mississippi, Kevin McKinney, Jennifer Nicely, Sahara Smith, The Wonderful Harmonizers, Loretta Williams, Gurnell, Amy LaVere, The Paul Green School of Rock All-Stars, The Steps, We Go To 11, The Sippy Cups, Daddy A Go Go, Farmer Jason, Q Brothers, Jambo, The Bummkinn Band, The Jellydots.

Highlights

Ben Kweller at the Austin City Limits Music Festival, 2006
  • Ben Kweller suffered a nosebleed during his set. He attempted to stem the flow by inserting a tampon, thrown to him by an audience member, into his nostril. The tampon expanded painfully and then he removed it. Kweller performed two more songs until he had to leave the stage.[1] The next day when The Flaming Lips performed, lead singer Wayne Coyne asked the audience to throw tampons at him to help mop up his signature fake blood. It continued to rain tampons on the band for well over two songs.
