An incident in episode 16 between Suzaku and Mao results in the latter revealing that Suzaku murdered his own father during the immediate aftermath of Britannia's invasion of Japan, when Suzaku, horrified by the country's devastation due to the war, tried to convince his father to surrender. Suzaku stabbed him after his father backhanded him away and refused to surrender, opting instead for a do-or-die resistance. The incident was covered up and Suzaku was spared, while the government was thrown into disarray and surrendered to Britannia. Lelouch justified this as Kirihara of the Kyoto group stated that Kururugi Genbu’s death had suppressed the hardline faction's call to the resistance of the bitter end. Moreover, he claims as Zero, prolonged resistance would have had the Chinese and Europeans intervention in the war to split Japan into 3 sectors, plunging it into a state of continuous war. Thus, Suzaku believes that the death of his father was necessary for Japan, even though he also believes that the ends achieved by using the wrong means are meaningless.

Suzaku Kururugi (枢木 スザク, Kururugi Suzaku) is a fictional character of the Sunrise anime series, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion. He is voiced by Takahiro Sakurai, while his child self is voiced by Akeno Watanabe.

Character Outline

Suzaku was introduced in the first episode of the series where he was a soldier from the Britannia army. While searching for the "bomb", he met his childhood friend, Lelouch Lamperouge. He refused to carry out an order to kill Lelouch, which lead to him being shot by his officer. However, he was saved by a broken pocket watch, a momento from his deceased father, which he always kept with him.

Though he agrees with Zero on the latter's assertion that the Britannia Empire is corrupt and not worth serving, he wants to change and improve the Empire from within, to show that his father's death was not in vain. This is because, as Suzaku claims, achieving results by wrong or illegal methods is meaningless. In a twist of fate, Suzaku becomes the pilot of Lancelot during the Shinjuku ghetto debacle due to the fact that it was 'experimental', resulting in the Knights (Knightmare Frame pilots) not being an option. After Lloyd had Suzaku tested if he could even pilot a Knightmare Frame, it was revealed that based on his evaluation score, Suzaku was a top-class operator. After the incident, he became a scapegoat for the death of Prince Clovis in episode three, in a plan apparently engineered by Margrave Jeremiah Gottwald. He was acquitted, and enrolled into Ashford Academy, by Euphemia's suggestion. His rank within the military was initially Private, but he was later promoted to Warrant Officer by Cornelia when she first arrived in Japan. Despite his position in the Britannian Army, he still regards Lelouch as a friend.

Suzaku's position as the Lancelot's pilot was revealed to everyone during a battle with his former instructor Kyōshirō Tōdō, the immediate aftermath of which he was chosen by Princess Euphemia to become her Knight, granting him the rank of Major. During the battle on Shikinejima Island, Lelouch was forced to use the power of Geass on Suzaku and commanded him to "Live". As this command gives no time or event limitations, it activates within Suzaku every time he feels suicidal and deters him from doing so. Suzaku falls in love with Euphemia, and thus is emotionally crushed by her death. He gets a visit from V.V., offering to explain to him about the truth behind Euphie's death. He later calls Lelouch using Euphie's phone, and tells him that his motives have turned from idealism to hatred, and that he will fight for hatred. This is further shown in the battle near the end of the first season where, instead of trying to save everyone, he brutally kills anyone who gets in his way, including senior Black Knights member Yoshida. It also appears that Suzaku has an undefined connection to the Geass (perhaps due to his earlier contact with C.C.), which allows him to "sense" individuals strongly related to the Geass such as C.C. and V.V.

Suzaku was formally granted Knight of Honor status by Cornelia near the end of the first season. He then follows Zero to Kaminejima and fires a shot that narrowly misses Zero as he was about to open the door and orders him to turn around slowly under gunpoint. When Zero tries to justify his actions about how Euphemia killed the Japanese, he asked Zero if Geass was a convenient tool. Zero is surprised that Suzaku knows about the Geass. After which, Suzaku calls out to Karen, who had been following him, and asked if she wants to know about Zero's identity. Despite Karen's feeble protest, he unmasks Zero by shooting and cracking Zero's helmet, revealing Lelouch's face. Unfazed, Lelouch offers a truce to Suzaku, telling him that Nunnally has been kidnapped. However, Suzaku refuses the truce, saying that Lelouch should have worked with Euphie all along. Lelouch counters by saying that Euphemia's death is the past, that Suzaku had killed his own father as well, and that they could always regret it later. However, Suzaku becomes enraged and rebukes that Lelouch will betray the world until the very end and that his very existence is a mistake. Sensing Suzaku finally has the intent to kill, Lelouch slaps a Sakuradite explosive onto his chest, declaring that the bomb would explode if it sensed his heart has stopped beating. Lelouch then attempts to ask Suzaku about Nunnally's kidnapper, but Suzaku angrily replies that things of the future have nothing to do with Lelouch. An enraged Lelouch then draws his pistol as well, and both men begin to pull the trigger. A gunshot is heard as the screen fades to black at the end of season one, leaving the fates of Lelouch, Suzaku, and Karen unknown.

Suzaku is the son of Japan's last prime minister, Genbu Kururugi. For reasons unknown, Suzaku's existence was kept a secret from the public until after the war.

However, after the murder of his father, his guilty conscience makes him constantly placing himself in the frontlines, in hope to atone for his action by dying.

Suzaku met Lelouch when Lelouch and Nunnally moved to the Kururugi residence as a diplomatic peace trade. At first, Suzaku despised Lelouch because he thought that he was a prince who didn't care about anyone. But as time passed by, he came to know Lelouch better, and they soon became best friends. They were separated when Britannia invaded Japan, but reunited in Shinjuku. However, their friendship was strained when he found out that Zero is actually Lelouch and that he killed Euphemia.
