Current Programming
WXXS FM is a fully automated radio station with no hired DJ's and no morning show. On-air its local programming is known as The Biggest Music: Kiss 102-FM but the official station name is Kiss 102.3. Kiss 102.3 is affiliated with CBS Radio Network News and airs a 5 minute newscast at the top of every hour.[1]
The programming at WXXS FM consists of songs from the Hot Adult Contemporary, Pop/Rock, Techno/Dance, Teen Pop, Pop & Rock, 90s Music, Hip-Hop, and Rhythmic/Urban/R&B genres with very few commercials, a strong focus on the teen and pre-teen demographic, and a spotlight on Mainstream Top 40 weekdays from 3PM to 9PM. WXXS devotes much of its airtime to its hybrid format and is the only terrestrial radio station in New England offering Teen Pop programming.[2] Some of Kiss 102.3's on-air slogans include "The Rhythm of the North Country", "Positively The Biggest Music Around: Kiss 102-FM", and "The North's Biggest Music Radio Station". Sometimes programming coincides with the formatting of its sister FM station, WLTN FM.
WXXS FM History
In August 1997 a construction permit to build a Class A radio station in Lancaster, New Hampshire was obtained.[3] First signing on in May 1998 as WXXS Kiss 102.3 as an Adult Contemporary/Country Radio Station at 700 watts, it remained a Class A station. Kiss 102.3 soon boosted their power to 1,500 watts for the remainder of its first two years until receiving permission from the FCC obtain Class C3 status. In doing so, Kiss 102.3 increased their power to its current 25,000 watts. In conjunction with that final power increase, WXXS FM traded in the Adult Contemporary/Country hybrid format for its current Diverse Hot AC / Top 40 Variety Pop/Rock / Dance / Teen Pop hybrid format.[2]
WXXS is now the second most powerful FM Radio station signal in Northern New Hampshire (behind 94.9 WHOM) and the only C3 FM radio station serving Coos and Grafton counties of New Hampshire and most of the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.[4]
Competition
Kiss 102.3 is one of three competing FM radio stations (WGMT Magic 97.7 and 92.1 WMOO & 99.3 W257AU Moo 92) offering a blend of music for a younger demographic audience to the remote communities of central and southern Coos County of New Hampshire. While its competitors pursue the standard Hot Adult Contemporary format with a standard Hot AC demographic, Kiss 102.3 is the only Hot Adult Contemporary radio station in northern New Hampshire and the Northeast Kingdom that also offers multi-year variety from Pop/Rock, Techno/Dance, Teen Pop, Pop & Rock, 90s Music, Hip-Hop, and Rhythmic/Urban/R&B formats and a strong focus on the teen and pre-teen demographic.[2]
