Story

In Dead or Alive 1, Hayate had been captured by DOATEC and made into a superhuman. This was done by mindcontrol and some genetic engineering via Project Epsilon. The leader of DOATEC at that time was Fame Douglas, whose organization wanted to create an ultimate superhuman. Hayate was not a playable character in DOA1 but he had a major role in the story. He was also the brother of Kasumi and Ayane, and a friend of Ryu Hayabusa.

In Dead or Alive 2, after the end of Project Epsilon, Hayate was in a state of temporary memory loss. He called himself EIN when he could not remember his real name. He learned karate in Germany from Hitomi's father, and soon mastered it. After that, he joined the second DOA tournament to find answers to his lost past. After he killed the evil Tengu Bankotsubo, the memories returned to him.

He returns in Dead Or Alive 3 under his original name, Hayate, the leader of the Mugen Tenshin style. His reason for joining the tornament this time is to defeat Genra, DOATEC's next superhuman creation. Hayate now wears a different outfit and has a pair of swords on his back. Some of his new moves are similar to Kasumi's; this was done on purpose to show their connection with the same fighting style and the same ninja village where they came from. He also knows some old moves from his karate experience. As a bonus, Tecmo (the makers of the DOA series) has put in the EIN character, with his DOA2 moveset, as an extra character in Dead or Alive 3 who can be unlocked. EIN is unlocked by beating Story Mode with all the characters, getting a high score on Survival Mode using Hayate and typing in your initials as EIN (in all capital letters). The only difference from his DOA2 appearance is that he now wears a longer black trenchcoat, the same coat Itagaki sometimes wears. It has been said that he is Itagaki's favourite male character.

He returns to Dead Or Alive Ultimate with the same story line as Dead Or Alive 2.

His standard tag mate is Ayane, but he can be just as strong when teamed up with Kasumi.
