São João dos Angolares (Portuguese meaning Saint John) is a small town on the east coast of São Tomé Island in São Tomé and Príncipe. It lies on a couple of small rivers and is based on fishing and two plantations. Coordinates: 0°21′33″N 6°33′6″E / 0.35917°N 6.55167°E
The town is named for the Angolan slaves who settled the area after a ship was wrecked on the Sete Pedras rocks in the sixteenth century, and whose descendants live in the settlement today. Some authorities claim the "Angolans" are actually a remnant of a pre-European population on the island. The townspeople speak Angolar (Ngola), a unique creole language.
