Amsoil, Inc. is a corporation based in Superior, Wisconsin that manufactures synthetic lubricants and filters. The company's slogan is "The First in Synthetics."

History

AMSOIL INC. was founded by Al Amatuzio (USAF Retired) in 1972. Prior to founding AMSOIL, Amatuzio was a fighter pilot, line maintenance officer, and squadron commander during the Cold War era. Having to use synthetic lubricants in the jet engines he maintained, he became aware of the significant benefits of using synthetic instead of petroleum-based oil.

The company was initially spelled "Amzoil" for "Amatuzio's Oil." It was then changed to AMSOIL. Contrary to popular belief, AMSOIL is not, nor has it ever been a part of or a sister company of Amway. AMSOIL is also not an acronym for "American Synthetic Oil."

In February 1994, Lubricants World magazine honored Amatuzio by inducting him into their "Hall of Fame" as the pioneer in synthetic motor oil.

In August 2005, AMSOIL and its founder, Al Amatuzio, were featured on The History Channel's Modern Marvels documentary "Lube Job" as a visionary and revolutionist in the modern motor oil market.

Corporate Structure

  • President & CEO: Al "A.J." Amatuzio
  • Executive Vice President/General Manager: Dean Alexander (son-in-law of Al)
  • Executive Vice President - Chief Operating Officer: Alan Amatuzio (son of Al)

AMSOIL distributes their products via a MLM-based network comprised of Dealers who sell synthetic lubricants and performance products to wholesale customers (non-dealers - called Preferred Customers), retail accounts and commercial accounts.

Customer Types

Dealer

A Dealer sells products to customers. There are no limitations on being a Dealer, no requirements, quotas or minimums. Currently the cost is $30/year (USD) with no other startup costs. A Dealer, as with all of the following accounts, must be sponsored by another Dealer.

Preferred customers

A Preferred Customer (PC) is someone who wants to purchase AMSOIL products at Dealer price, but is not interested in building a business, nor making a profit on reselling AMSOIL products or sponsoring other accounts. The cost of being a Preferred Customer is $20/year (USD) however there is a one-time 6-month trial membership option for $10/year. This program is comparable to being a member of Sam's Club or Costco. About 20% is shaved off of the MSRP price of AMSOIL product for Dealers and Preferred Customers. Therefore the break-even point to holding a PC account is roughly $100/year.

Retail accounts

Retail-On-The-Shelf Accounts (ROTS) are physical retail outlets such as an independent parts store, repair shop, or oil change shop that carry and retail AMSOIL products. These establishments must be sponsored by a dealer as the dealer gets a commission on everything the ROTS account purchases. The only requirement to be a ROTS account is a physical location (separate from a residence), usually with a public store front, and a business address/phone number. There is a limit for any new ROTS accounts that they must have 12 or less locations.

Commercial accounts

Commercial accounts (CAs) are for business that wish to be an end-user of AMSOIL products. Commercial accounts get a wholesale discount, much like PCs and ROTS, however, CAs are not authorized to resell AMSOIL products per an agreement signed during the application process.

Catalog customers

"Catalog customers" (CRs) is the term used to any individual customers that pay full retail price for AMSOIL products. These customers can be serviced through a local dealer and physically receive the product from them. Or, this customer can order through Amsoil directly and be assigned a local dealer in which that dealer gets commission for that customer's order.

Distribution

AMSOIL INC. manufactures its products in Superior, WI and then ships these products to their various regional distribution centers. Once at the product distribution centers, the products are stored in the warehouse until they are ordered. Once a product is ordered, the regional distribution center will pull it from the shelves and ship it via UPS to the customer on the invoice. Dealers, PCs, ROTS, and commercial accounts have the option to pick up their order directly from the warehouse thus avoiding a freight charge.

AMSOIL regional distribution centers are currently located in:

Technology and products

AMSOIL is an innovator in the synthetic lubricants industry. AMSOIL is:

  • First to develop an American Petroleum Institute-rated 100 percent synthetic motor oil.
  • First to introduce the concept of "extended drain intervals" with a recommended 25,000-mile/1-year drain interval.
  • First U.S. company to utilize the NOACK volatility test as a standard of performance excellence.
  • First to produce synthetic motor oils for diesel engines, racing engines, turbo and marine engines.
  • First to introduce synthetic oils that legitimately contribute to improving fuel efficiency.
  • First to manufacture synthetic gear lube for automotive use.
  • First to manufacture a 100:1 pre-mix synthetic 2-cycle oil.
  • First to manufacture a synthetic automatic transmission fluid for automotive use.
  • First to develeop a synthetic 5w-20 weight motor oil.

AMSOIL has a history of direct head-to-head comparisons using laboratory results to show their product superiority against their competitors. Southwest Research Institute is usually the lab of choice using American Society for Testing and Materials methods, standards, and procedures. Many of the results of these tests are freely and openly published by AMSOIL in order to support their claims of producing a superior product.

AMSOIL manufactures the following products most of which are synthetic:

Late in 2005, AMSOIL announced a licensing of technology from Donaldson and a partnership with WIX for AMSOIL's new brand of Ea Filters and now in late 2006 a partnership with Mothers car care products. Donaldson produces oil and air filters for large heavy-duty diesel trucks, and WIX creates filters for the light duty truck and personal vehicle market, Mothers has car appearance products that are made for all vehicle appearance needs.
