Destructoid is an independent video game blog based in Miami, Florida, that was founded in March 2006 as a scheme to earn its creator, Yanier Gonzalez, invitation to the press-only E3 2006 conference.[2] It has since grown into one of the most widely read video game blogs on the internet, reaching over 2 million unique visitors per month.[3] Kotaku (managed by Gawker Media) and Joystiq (managed by AOL), two other popular video game blogs, comprise Destructoid’s main competition. Destructoid is distinguished by its significant community presence; many of the site’s registered members are as well known among the community as the editors themselves. The editors’ work is tailored to the community audience, which has its own mouthpiece in the site’s community blogs.
Bloggers
Associate Editors
Destructoid has a staff that consists of over 30 freelance Associate Editors. The editors fall into one of two main categories: Gaming News & Culture, or Original Features. The latter often consists of a column with a specific aim or focus, such as Chad Concelmo’s “The Memory Card”,[4] which discusses iconic and classic moments in video games. Destructoid's Community Manager, Ron Workman, has been featured on The Bonus Round with Geoff Keighley alongside other video game blog managers.
Original Features
Destructoid's aforementioned 36 associate editors occasionally run series of editorials or weekly articles that are usually well-praised amongst its community members and self-acclaimed 'lurkers', or Destructoid-faithful readers without any official presence on the web site.
New Releases
This feature isn't exactly new, but every Monday, Destructoid editor Hamza "CTZ" Aziz makes a post on the front page that showcases videos of all of the video game releases for the week, along with lists of the games, categorized by console.
Monday Mind Teasers
Monday Mind Teasers is a weekly Destructoid original feature, in which Destructoid editor Tom "Fronz" Fronczak edits images of miscellaneous video game box arts to show only the silhouettes of prominent items on the cover. Dtoiders are then supposed to guess the name of each of the games featured, along with the central theme that connects the box arts. To the discontent of Fronz, these puzzles are usually solved within 45 minutes or less of posting.
Game Debate to the Death!
This feature is one that has garnered a lot of respect within the community, as Destructoid editor Tom "Fronz" Fronczak has pitted multiple gaming characters, series, or developers against each other, only for the Destructoid community to decide who the winner would be in a hypothetical battle.
Games Time Forgot
This feature is based around nostalgia, and games that suffer from a lack of exposure. This editorial is mainly run by Destructoid editor Anthony "RevAnthony" Burch. In the past, RevAnthony has written about relatively old games that have been forgotten as time passes, due to a lack of exposure or certain minimal faults in the game itself. This has also given RevAnthony a reputation of a great writer, along with the idea that his articles are extremely lengthy.
YTMND Thursday
This feature focuses on showing the best of humorous game-related animations created at YTMND, and the occasional 'Random Man Now Dog', which is just a small section of YTMNDs that have nothing to do with gaming. This feature is mainly run by Hamza "CTZ" Aziz, every Thursday.
Art Attack Friday
This feature has switched between editors, ranging from Colette Bennett, to Hamza "CTZ" Aziz, to Tiffany ".tiff" Chow. Art Attack Friday, is a weekly feature that showcases the best of game-related art across the web. In the past, Destructoid community members, such as TehUberOne, GuitarAtomik, Chris Furniss, and Maxpower, have been showcased in Art Attack Friday for their outstanding artwork relating to Destructoid and video games in general.
Fake Game Friday
This editorial is run mainly by the community, but published to the front page by Anthony "RevAnthony" Burch. Every week, the community gives suggestions, and occasionally juxtaposed images to go along with the descriptions, of fake games that would be popular or humorous with those in the community.
Weekend Destructainment
Every Saturday, Hamza "CTZ" Aziz posts a collection of gaming-videos from the internet that assorted Destructoid members have found, including a random robot video, to go along with the site's overall theme of its robot mascot.
Bargain Bin Laden
Occasionally, Destructoid editor Aaron Linde learns of a deal that needs to be acknowledged by the entire Destructoid community. Such deals include current video game blockbusters selling for significantly less, along with cult classics selling for significantly less than they were at their launch.
This Weeks Finest
Each week, Hamza "CTZ" Aziz posts a collection of front page posts from Destructoid and its sister site, Japanator. (At one point, Nextlust was also featured, but removed once Nextlust unofficially went on hiatus) It also features the top 5 posts from the community blogs and the Destructoid forums.
Games of the Week
Each Sunday, Destructoid editor Earnest "Nex" Cavalli posts a collection of lists of games that the Destructoid editors are playing as the week progresses. Destructoid members are encouraged to post their own lists in the comments of the story.
Community Blogs
In addition to Destructoid's staff of writers, the site also features work published by community members in its Community Blogs section. These stories are commonly referred to as "cblogs" or "clogs" by the Destructoid community.
Popular or particularly worthy community blogs are often promoted to Destructoid's front page in order to reach a wider readership, and in at least one instance, popular Community Bloggers have been invited to join the Destructoid staff.[citation needed]
Currently, Destructoid's Community Blogs produce between forty and fifty new stories per day.
Awards
Destructoid has been recognized by organizations that give out awards for excellence in video game coverage. The site was nominated for the inaugural Games Media Awards in 2007 under the “Non-Commercial Website or Blog” category,[5] but lost out to UK:Resistance.[6] Destructoid was also selected as an Official Webby Honoree in the Games-Related category of the 11th Annual Webby Awards in 2007. Official Honorees represented fewer than the top 15% of all websites that were submitted that year.[7]
Presence in video games
Bomberman Live playable character
On September 17, 2007, it was announced that Hudson Soft had teamed up with Destructoid to develop and introduce a playable character based on Destructoid's mascot, Mr. Destructoid, into its successful Xbox Live Arcade game Bomberman Live.[8] The character was included in "Bomb-Up Pack 2," which was released on September 26, 2007, for 250 Microsoft Points.[9] The artwork for the character was created by Destructoid community member Phist.[10]
Xbox Live gamerpic
Following the success of Bomb-Up Pack 2, Hudson Soft again featured Mr. Destructoid in their latest Bomberman Live Gamer Picture pack on Xbox Live.[citation needed]
