Night of the Long Knives

Consider this sentence: "The events of June 30, 1934 – the Night of the Long Knives – further solidified von Kleist-Schmenzin's opposition to the Nazi régime." My opinion that the phrasing, "further solidified his opposition," obscures the fact that he was roughly twelve years old when the Night of the Long Knives occurred. What is the nature of a twelve year old's opposition to a dictatorship? (Admittedly, Anne Frank was 13 when she began her famous diary, but need we assume that von Kleist-Schmenzin, a child of the aristocracy, was that politically aware at 12?) Rephrase? Just a hint: He is not dead, as I've talked with him some days ago. See the german wikipedia, where his dead is missing also. Please erase this passage.
