John Douglas Surman (born on 30 August 1944 in Tavistock, England), is a jazz saxophone, clarinet, flute and synthesizer player.
He has made records (principally for ECM since the late 1970s) in a variety of settings: solo, in duo with Jack DeJohnette, with a bass player and a string quartet, in groups with Terje Rypdal and John Taylor, and so on. He has also appeared on record with a variety of other artists, including John McLaughlin's early groups, and a trio with Dave Holland and oud-player Anouar Brahem.
