District information
Budget1060, an increase of 6.2% or $60 million over the previous year[1]

Peel District School Board is the public board of education for the Peel Regional Municipality serving the Ontario communities of Mississauga, Brampton, and Caledon.

Staff and students

The Peel District School Board currently has 221 schools: 189 elementary schools and 32 secondary schools. As of 2005 there were 145,000 students, with a teaching staff of 8,700 and an additional 3,300 business and support staff.[1]

New schools

For the 2005-2006 school year, the Board opened 8 new schools:[1]

  1. Oscar Peterson Public School
  2. Roberta Bondar Public School
  3. Cheyne Middle School
  4. Mississauga Secondary School
  5. Mount Royal Public School
  6. Red Willow Public School
  7. Rowntree Public School
  8. Stanley Mills Public School

For the 2006-2007 school year, there are plans to open 7 new schools,[1] though details for only 6 of these are currently available on the school board's web site:

  1. Calderstone Middle School (September 2006)[3]
  2. Eagle Plains Public School (September 2006)[3]
  3. James Potter Public School (December 2006)[4]
  4. Lougheed Middle School (September 2006)[4]
  5. Thorndale Public School (September 2006)[5]
  6. Stephen Lewis Secondary School (fall 2006)[6]

Over the next 5 years, the school board's capital plan forecasts needing to open 26 new schools to keep up with enrollment growth.[1]

French immersion

The Peel District School Board offers a French immersion program at 19 of its elementary schools, and at three of its high schools. In addition, two other high schools have partial French immersion, and another six schools offer an extended French program.[7]

For the 2004-2005 school year, there were 5,160 elementary students (5% of the elementary student population) and 1,025 high school students (3% of the high school student population) enrolled in the French immersion program.[8]

Transportation costs to the Peel District School Board to get elementary immersion students to schools with the French immersion program amounted to an extra expense of $1.4 million per year. For the same period, provincial grants provided to the Peel District School Board by the province of Ontario for French immersion programs totalled $1.789 million.[8]
