"Meet the Propaniacs"

"Meet the Propaniacs" is the 80th episode in the FOX animated situation comedy series King of the Hill and was the 20th episode of the fourth season.

Plot

Hank arranges for Bobby to work at Strickland Propane during the summer. When Bobby uses comedy to divert everyone's attention away from a grill shortage during a big grill sale, Hank finally appreciates Bobby's comedic talent. As a result of Bobby's success in averting the potential crisis, the Propaniacs, a comedy troupe (consisting of Bobby, Luanne, Joe Jack, and Donna from Accounting), are formed in order to motivate Strickland Propane's sales staff with a series of short improvisational comedy routines related to propane and propane accessories. The act is so well received that Buck Strickland sends the Propaniacs to his other branches, including Strickland North which Hank describes as "charcoal country" to help sagging sales.

Eventually the act is asked to perform at a propane convention, but things go badly first when Joe Jack arrives drunk, and then when Hank insists that Charlie Fortner, the president of the Texas Association of Propane Dealers, appear in a sketch. He is pulled onto stage against his protests, and Hank, much to his horror, discovers his self-consciousness stems from his use of adult diapers.

Despite Hank's truthful insistence that the incident was unintentional, Fortner forbids the Propaniacs from performing at conventions or propane outlets, but Peggy books the Propaniacs at the Arlen Mall (outside of Fortner's reach), where the propane humor falls flat.

Hank, Bobby, Luanne, Buck & Joe Jack: The Propaniacs!
Peggy: Propane Maniacs!
  • Hank: Just so long as you are laughing with propane and not at propane.
Bobby: I would never laugh at propane, Dad, unlike butane or some other bastard gas.
  • Bobby, Luanne, Joe Jack, & Donna From Accounting: The Propaniacs, Propaniacs on the floor, and we'll make you laugh, and laugh, and laugh some more...
  • Joe Jack: I need a new diaper. Baby did a bad, bad thing!
  • Dale (playing keyboards): On keyboards, the big "D" himself, Rusty Shackleford!
  • Bobby: Butane, charcoal, and your mother in-law. (opens envelope) Name three things you don't want at your Fourth of July BBQ.
