William Hutchinson was a convict, emancipist, and later superintendent who lived on Norfolk Island for many years during the first convict settlement period.

When the island was evacuated in 1813, Hutchinson was left with a small party of well-behaved convicts and a shepherd to slaughter and salt down all the stock that remained, for shipment to Sydney. All buildings were destroyed, so that nothing would be left to attract passing ships, especially those from any foreign power, or escaped convicts.

On 15 February 1814 Hutchinson and his party left the island. On his return to Sydney he wrote a report of his completed task for Governor Macquarie. Norfolk Island lay abandoned for eleven years.
