Request: Most people liked the newer versions, but disliked certain aspects, especially the blue. You graphics people should be able to make them a lot better, though. See Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Redesign_of_placeholder_images for previous discussion, including rationale. — Omegatron 13:46, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
Graphist opinion: A few specifics of what you would like done would be really helpful at generating interest. —Cronholm144 08:09, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
- Make them look better? There are many details discussed in the link to the Village Pump. — Omegatron 04:04, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- Comment: I think you'd be best keeping the discussion in one place, rather than on two different pages. Also, I really don't like the most recent images under the title "Another scheme". "Addressing some concerns:" looks better, the designs are more consistent and look smoother. --Dave the Rave (DTR)talk 15:02, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
- I agree. They are less readable and less professional than even the original ones. I believe the best way to go would be a grayscale SVG theme for every category, including the "missing cover" images, in the style of "Addressing some concerns". vlad§inger tlk 22:54, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
- I've asked for some feedback on what should be done at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Redesign_of_placeholder_images. It would nice to have every placeholder image on Wikipedia in the same style (consistancey + standardisaton = good, at least, in my mind), but I realise this is probably impossible. --Dave the Rave (DTR)talk 17:35, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

- I'm not sure I like the inconsistancy between the man and woman in the last set - the man gets head and shoulders, the woman down to her waist, and her pose is a lot less formal. Adam Cuerden talk 22:31, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
- Hmm. It also makes assumptions as to the generic woman's age that may, in all likelihood, not be true - imagine that cutout in, say, Queen Elizabeth II. For that matter, the American skyscraper skyline cutouts are probably not very appropriate for historical buildings, which could also cause cognitive dissonance Adam Cuerden talk 22:35, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

What about Image:No Photo Available.svg with the outline of a battleship in the background? (It's almost solely used for old Federal/DANFS ships, so you aren't likely to have much trouble there. 68.39.174.238 02:06, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
I posted this on the Village pump on this topic: I'd like to see the request be small, italic, and bracketed. I came here from WP talk: Avoid self-references; my issue with the proposals is that they mix content and Wikipedia "meta-content" without enough clarity. Most of the meta-content in Wikipedia is italic, including disambiguations, citation needed, and stub notices. (The only meta-content not in italics are framed things like NPOV.) How about either (1) change "Click here to upload one" to smaller text in the top right that says [upload a picture] or (2) get rid of the silhouette and go with a frame that looks more like the NPOV, perhaps with the text "No free image exists. You can help Wikipedia by providing one."? Consider these two versions, which make an effort to be clear about what is meta-content:
I think these are less like "...where he died in 1862. Have more information? Click here to edit the article." and more like "...where he died in 1862.[day of death needed]" —Ben FrantzDale 14:31, 18 September 2007 (UTC)

Request: Convert this CoA to SVG.-- 213.186.253.148 07:08, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
- Additional information: The current image on the articel (In English) is incorrect per this. The request should be to create a vector version of the real Grand Duchy coat. This seems to be easily enough done by adding a correct crown to the current coat of arms. 68.39.174.238 03:15, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Graphist opinion: I've made an SVG version of the one that's currently on there. Please tell me what should be changed about the crown. -- I. Pankonin (t/c) 03:22, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
- Since I'm not the first person who asked the question, I don't know. I think his main request was that the completely erroneous coat of arms that's on the articel now (The one with the Russian eagle) be replaced with an SVG of the correct arms. If they wanted something more specific, they can file another request later with better detail. Thanx. 68.39.174.238 (talk) 00:13, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Map service icons
Article(s): Template:GeoTemplate / Template:GeoTemplate/sandbox / Template:GeoTemplate/sandbox/main.css
Request: There's been some work recently to improve the coordinate service list Wikipedia links to, and one of the proposals uses icons to signify the type of service (see example). They're perhaps understandable-ish in the proposed context, but at least the map icon needs improvement. Could someone draw or place something on it so that it looks like a map, while being different enough from the satellite icon but still keeping the same style? The hybrid one might need modification accordingly. --Para 14:59, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
- Suggestion: A North Arrow on the map icon maybe? --Dave the Rave (DTR)talk 17:54, 24 October 2007 (UTC)
Graphist opinion: I had a quick go at the hybrid because I'm going on holiday for 5 days from tomorrow. Oh and for anyone who wants to continue this, the SVG's of this theme are available here (And the palette for the theme is included in it, might be useful) . > Rugby471 talk ⚔ 18:00, 19 October 2007 (UTC)
What about using this for the satellite: Rocket000 05:14, 27 October 2007 (UTC)
- Looks good. The map icon is still missing though. My idea for the hybrid was to simply put the map and satellite icons together, but we'd need a descriptive map icon first. --Para 19:50, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
- The map could have lines to show roads...
Blacklemon67: Why so much perspective distortion? I think it makes it harder to recognize. And perhaps the white street lines on the hybrid should be thicker so there' more visual difference to the sattelite icon. -- Ddxc 11:39, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Article(s): London Midland
Request:
- This is a pdf map of the whole london Midland network. Could this be converted to SVG andimproved. It is not yet being used in an article. Thanks, Dewarw 16:56, 26 October 2007 (UTC)
Graphist Opinion:
- I converted it to svg version. Thanks to Illustrator's built in support for pdf files :). You will however, need to fix the license on the image I uploaded, as the license is not correct. Hope you like! XcepticZP 14:32, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
I am afraid, that the new version is a infringement of copyright! The image needs to be improved (changing the layout, colours etc.) to remove this copyright status. It cannot look exactly like the original. This is a priority as it needs to be sorted soon otherwise the image will be deleted! Thanks, Dewarw 21:21, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Image has been altered, removed the titles off of it, and changed the entire color scheme. XcepticZP 07:52, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
The image still needs improvements, as it still may be copyrighted. Dewarw 20:18, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
A family tree
Article(s): Eadbald of Kent, Wihtred of Kent, with more possible
Request: Basically a simple SVG-ification, mostly in hope that thumb versions will be more legible. -- Circeus 19:55, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
Comment There is Wiki-synatx (a template, I think) to make a family tree. See Template:HarryPotterFamilyTree. It might be of some use. --Dave the Rave (DTR)talk 21:02, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
- Seems tome that using it would take far more room than is needed, besides, the image already exists, so it makes more sense to replace it with a svg than with obnoxiously complex wikicode. Circeus 00:54, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

- Come on, it's not that complex... Besides, you get the ability to include some convenient wikilinks in the bargain. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 01:44, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- Doesn't mean it's not ridiculously over-large. Given this is a FA, and I myself don't believe the addition of a text replacement like this to be a good idea, don't count on me to fight for the inclusion of this. Circeus 23:39, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

- What a rude response given the amount of work Ilmari put into it. Nobody's "counting on you" to do anything, nobody asked you even to put your request here, but since you did, the least you could do is keep a civil tongue in your head while you're here. These Graphic Lab folks do an awful lot of weird requests for a lot of obscure articles, some of which may get a dozen reads a year, as volunteers, and while you may not have thanks for them, they don't need your pedantry. Ilmari's very clear, legible chart is a far improvement over what there was, and took him a great deal of time. If it's not what you seek, explain what you do seek without whining. Chris 06:24, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
- He's certainly got the right not to use the {{familytree}} version if he doesn't like it. It can be made a bit smaller, as I've done above, and enclosed in a {{imageframe}}, but it's certainly possible that an image could be made even more compact while remaining legible. I made this version because it really is pretty simple to do (at least if you know the syntax); it doesn't represent a significant investment of effort on my part. Certainly it shouldn't be too hard to draw an SVG replacement in Inkscape either. Or perhaps someone who's good with Graphviz might want to take a shot at this... —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 21:53, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

Request: SVGification and coordination (The two look nothing like each other). The 1st should be easily converted as its practically an SVG now; the latter I'm not sure about, but it does give an example of what the symbols actually are. 68.39.174.238 15:37, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Graphist Opinion: Ok I've started this one. I will convert the first one to an svg. Anyone wanting to do further work on it afterwards can use it as a base. By the way, next time please use the template specified on the top of the page. It is there for a reason. Least of all, spelling. XcepticZP 18:36, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Image of Earth to be used
Article:Big Bang
Request: This didn't go over well.
Here's what we need, I think:
- black background
- explosion from center outward
- large universal no circle-and-slash symbol in background: with black, probably best to be very dark red, but still clearly prominent
- three galaxies instead of the stars shown in the explosion with arrows showing they came from the center, colored yellow, orange, and red as shown
- the planet Earth where the stick-figure is
- important: the distance between Earth and the yellow galaxy should be the same as from Earth to the red galaxy
I think that will do it.
When ready, please revert the edit above and this one please. Thank you. Biochem67 17:27, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Graphist opinion: Had a quick go at it, might be easier to start in SVG so changes are easy, and then at the end, use the correct earth image/ galaxy images in a PNG image > Rugby471 talk ⚔ 17:59, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

Request: We need a placeholder for books without covers. I'm not good at talking using a keyboards so that's all I'm going to say.
Opinions: In my own opinion, I think this could work.
- I uploaded an SVG, so it can be easily edited, and unlimited scaling obviously. I added a small border to the left part to make it seem more natural and changed the text to mimic current placeholders. > Rugby471 talk ⚔ 17:45, 29 November 2007 (UTC)

- IMHO it looks a little too much like a DVD cover. Here are some ideas: Make the binding smaller/marrower (it looks like a mechanical part right now), make the color yellow-ish paper-white, make the surface matte (i.e. no dark-to-light to transition, it makes it look shiny like plastic), and make the corners smaller (less rounded). I'm not good at editing vector images myself—I hope you don't mind me chiming in nonetheless... -- Ddxc 08:49, 1 December 2007 (UTC)

Better version from French Wikipedia, copyright status needs to be updated.
Article(s): Tunisia and Project template
Request: resurrecting request from anonymous user but actually using correct template Primarily SVGification, but also the correction of some errors:
- The red circle at the top appears to have been cut at a strange angle for no good reason.
- According to FotW and the Officials, the colors are outdated, all should be in gold.
The simplest fix for this is, the correct image exists at http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Armoiries_Tunisie.gif , all that needs to happen is to crosswiki and SVGify, but I do not know the rules on crosswikiing. Should this then be a Commons image? -- Chris (talk) 06:21, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Graphist opinion: I have put the version from the French wikipedia on commons, but does someone know what the copyright status would be? In the meantime, I will now create an svg. --Slashme 14:11, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

- I'm pretty sure it's a rampant lion, but that is funny. :) Chris 07:54, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
- I hope I haven't offended any Tunisians, but that tail looks very simian, and unlike any lion I've seen. ;-] --Slashme 08:44, 3 December 2007 (UTC)
I've now added the ship; I don't really feel confident about doing the motto. Someone who speaks Arabic can help out here. Who did the motto on the Pakistan coat of arms? --Slashme 13:26, 4 December 2007 (UTC)
And now I've done the motto. Unfortunately the quality is a bit low, but maybe someone who speaks Arabic can fix it. I'll put it on the Tunisia page and put in a request for review on the talk page. --Slashme (talk) 08:16, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
- WRT the lion, could it be taken from a different coat of arms instead of the fr. one (Which does look questionable) ? 68.39.174.238 (talk) 18:35, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
I'd be glad to; Which do you suggest? --Slashme (talk) 23:15, 7 December 2007 (UTC)
- The Vector-images one is best, but it's copyrighted, so I'll suggest maybe modifying the lion on Image:Scottish royal coat of arms.svg, scaling it down, and then adding the sword. I'm not sure if that's possible, but the current one (The one taken from the French version) definitely takes some work to interpret as a lion... 68.39.174.238 (talk) 17:32, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
- It's what it looks like on the official government website. I'd call it done. Chris (talk) 09:04, 10 December 2007 (UTC)
User:Bestofmed gave me the text of the motto, so I converted it to paths and used it in the CoA. I think it's an improvement, but I don't speak Arabic, so it's at best an educated guess. --Slashme (talk) 06:54, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

The first one is wrong. I have been a hindu for 18 years, and I have never seen an aum like that. Its rediculious that some people actually consider using it and would support it. It is totally misrepresenting a symbol. If you want proof, click here: [2] Nikkul (talk) 09:05, 7 December 2007 (UTC)

Request: There has been a discussion [3] on improving this image to reflect the geography of India.
Could you please remove the names of all the cities except the major ones (Bangalore, Chennai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata)
Also, could you insert the names of the mountains (found here: [4]) and add the names of the rivers (found here: [5]) into this image. If you could make this picture with the rivers and mountains and without the city names as a new image, that would be really great. Thanks so much
This would elimiate the need to have two maps in the geography section of the India page. Thanks sooo much.

- Please check the new version. The map which I used was a blank SVG map from commons which was divided along national lines, so I just went along with its opinion on which islands belonged to whom. It doesn't separate Hong Kong from the rest of China, so if there is a scout organisation there, let me know and I can update accordingly. There were also a few spots on the map which didn't seem to correlate with countries, but I'm sure the relevant scouts organisations can figure them out. --Slashme (talk) 06:51, 15 December 2007 (UTC)

- You sir are a great man people will write songs about. Clean ones this time! ;) Minor tweaks:
- Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan should be purple
- Done
- place red dots on Hong Kong and Macao, they do have Scouts, thanks for the insight!
- Done (just big red dots, as the map I was using doesn't identify Macao or HK properly.)
- Hainan island (south China, near Vietnam) should not be red
- Sorted
- trim all excess border so map is visibly larger
- Not done. Inkscape didn't want to do this, so I'd have to hack it in by hand, and there really isn't that much white space anyway. If it really bothers you, I guess I could, but look carefully along the edges and you'll see some islands very close to the edge.
- six non-Scouting countries lighter grey like my crude mockup-stands out better

Surely there's a better source image somewhere... ¦ Reisio (talk) 08:23, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
- That is a fair but incorrect assumption. This is Eastern Europe, after all, and the organization was only split away last year. Time moves differently there. The old emblem is still on their website and paperwork. So no, there's really not. But all the elements are provided above to create one, which is why I have asked. Chris (talk) 08:53, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
Might be a decent SVG outline of the state in Image:BlankMap-World6.svg. ¦ Reisio (talk) 10:57, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
- Whoops, nope. ¦ Reisio (talk) 19:50, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
- It won't open, can it be downloaded here? Chris (talk) 03:18, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Resaved as Plain SVG, give it a go now. ¦ Reisio (talk) 03:39, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- Tried again, again no luck, can it be downloaded here? Chris (talk) 03:47, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Try once more, please — I've removed the raster image links. ¦ Reisio (talk) 03:49, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- Still nothing. Is there some reason you will not simply upload it here? Chris (talk) 04:00, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, I don't want the responsibility of defending it from the deletionists. You can upload it just as well as I, anyways. ¦ Reisio (talk) 04:05, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- If that were true, I would have uploaded it myself, as evidenced by my three times above telling you I couldn't see it. Feel free to help others on their requests, you're spinning your wheels on this. Chris (talk) 04:11, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
You don't have to be able to open it to upload it. ¦ Reisio (talk) 04:20, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Reisio-I'm sorry you don't want to upload it yourself, but that doesn't then count as assistance-no one else has that issue here. We all upload images. I would be happy to "defend it from the deletionists" as you put it, myself. Will a veteran Graphic Lab artist help with uploading this? Chris (talk) 04:55, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- The assistance part would be assembling the image in the first place. If you are happy to do it yourself, then why don't you go ahead and upload it. ¦ Reisio (talk) 05:00, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
Funny way of assisting. I already said I couldn't upload it. I said I would be happy to defend it. Your reading skills could use some work. Why don't you go bother someone else who wants your peculiar brand of "assistance"? I certainly do not. Chris (talk) 05:06, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- You said "It won't open", but no matter — as long as you don't hide the image I assembled on your behalf, I'm happy to not converse with you. ¦ Reisio (talk) 05:15, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Could you both stop the bickering, please? Reisio's image shows up just fine on my computer, and indeed looks quite nice and remarkably like the original. If he doesn't want to upload it himself and thereby subject his user talk page to messages from any user or bot that decides to contest the image's fair use claim, that's his choice. Certainly there should be no reason to berate him for not going the extra mile after he's already taken the trouble of SVGifying the image in the first place. You asked for an SVG, Chris, and he gave you an SVG — now please try to avoid demanding a shrubbery too. (As it happens, I don't really want to upload that image myself either, since I'm still not quite 100% convinced that all these SVG scouting emblems actually satisfy all the demands of our non-free content policy, and thus do not feel myself capable, in good conscience, of coming up with a fair use rationale arguing that they in fact do so.) —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 05:27, 17 December 2007 (UTC)

sorry
I am sorry that we butted heads tonight. I don't usually do that. You put a great deal of work into that image, that's beautiful, and once I saw it I realized we just somehow got wires crossed. I'm not that guy, I promise. Thank you so much, I appreciate your hard work on it. Chris (talk) 08:15, 17 December 2007 (UTC)
- (in fact, I owe everyone here an apology for losing my temper, it was ugly, I should have stepped back and didn't. I love you guys, I love the fact that we have a Graphics Lab and I love the privilege of being able to use that. I never want to ruin that. I hope you all have a happy new year.) PNG working right
I have uploaded the map of Sitakunda Upazila in both SVG and PNG formats. Image:Sitamap.svg is showing a blank frame, therefore I added Image:Sitamap.png to the article. But, as far as I know the policy is to upload maps in SVG format. Can someone help me to get this right? Aditya(talk • contribs) 06:56, 16 December 2007 (UTC)
I put it through inkscape and cleaned up the code slightly, it's working now. > Rugby471 talk ⚔ 09:02, 16 December 2007 (UTC)

- Personally, I'd just use a different image from http://www.erh.noaa.gov/rah/photo/; there are others there that will get the same point across, and whose text can be cropped out without reducing the quality of the image as much as doing so to this one would. ¦ Reisio (talk) 04:48, 18 December 2007 (UTC)
- Even though, I deiced to make a try to remove the text, was really difficult as of the extensive JPEG artifacts around the text. →AzaToth 14:58, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

Graphist opinion: I thought the beams in the background were distracting, so I removed them, too. SagredoDiscussione? 03:57, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- Nice! Can we do that? Chris (talk) 06:18, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- It will never be a featured photo, but it's certainly less "creative" than this [8]. Had the camera, actor and airplane been positioned only slightly differently, the beams would not have showed. So I don't think there's a loss of "encyclopedic" value. (Oops, had about 5 files of this thing saved, didn't realize I'd grabbed one with the background people removed.) - Let me know which objects/people you want in the photo. I think it looks best with both people and beams removed. (And actually I think the answer is, we can, if no one screams.) SagredoDiscussione? 20:23, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- I like image 2), the beam is unnecessary, but the little guy adds perspective and "cred" to the photo being a homemade one and not a screencapture or something.Chris (talk) 03:12, 20 December 2007 (UTC)

- Could the stars in the cantons have their stars normalized? The lines of the upper arms are curved downward strangely. 68.39.174.238 (talk) 14:00, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- I guess I could, but I don't think that would be quite right. The star is drawn slightly "fat" in the original, which is what makes the arms look "curved". I've made the change to the second flag, so now you have a skinnier star than was originally drawn. Let me know what you think, and I can change the 1st ensign if you prefer this version. You might have to clear the page cache to see the change. --Slashme (talk) 15:14, 19 December 2007 (UTC)

Request: It would be nice to help this image pop a bit more as the monotone makes it blah on the page now. Firstly can we mitigate the "WIDDER" as it's so prominent? Then I suggest ramping up the contrast and finally playing with the color. If the ram could be white or at least lighter or vice versa might help the image pop more but I'm open to all suggestions. Request: This my first attempt at drawing a diagram and it's a perfect storm of why you shouldn't draw diagrams with a) little to no artistic talent b) on a crummy laptop touchpad and c) with truly pitiful illustrator experience.
