To LOVE-Ru (To LOVEる -とらぶる-, To LOVE-Ru -Toraburu-) (a double entendre with the word "trouble") is a manga written by Hasemi Saki, and illustrated by Kentaro Yabuki, creator of Black Cat. It is serialized weekly in Weekly Shonen Jump. A drama CD has been announced to be released in February, 2008. An anime series has also been announced [2] to begin in April, 2008.
Plot
The story is about Rito Yūki, a high-school boy who cannot confess to the girl of his dreams, Haruna Sairenji. One day when coming home and sulking in the bath-tub a mysterious, nude girl, appears out of nowhere. Her name is Lala and she comes from the planet Deviluke, where she is the heir to the throne. Her father wants her to return to her home planet so she can marry one of the husband candidates, but she decides that she wants to marry Rito in order to stay on Earth. Commander Zastin has been ordered to bring Lala back and has already battled Rito. He reports to the emperor that Rito would be suited to marry Lala, after hearing Rito say that marriage is impossible unless it is with the person you love (Rito was actually defending himself but Zastin and Lala thought he was defending Lala). With this speech, Lala truly falls in love with Rito and decides that she wants to marry Rito. Her father decides that, if Rito is able to protect Lala from her fiances, then he can be her fiance, but if Rito cannot protect Lala from her other fiances, Lala's father will kill Rito and destroy Earth.
Several months later, Lala's father comes to earth to tell her that Rito was officially chosen as her future husband, but Lala refuses to marry Rito, because she has noticed that Rito loves someone else. She decides to erase the memories of her from all people on Earth with one of her inventions (Bye Bye Memory-kun), so she can start all over again on Earth. However, when waiting in front of school the next day, she finds out that her invention did not work and that everyone still knows her. Now, Lala, Rito and everyone begin a new year of high school as 2nd years.
Characters
Main
- Rito Yūki (結城 リト, Yūki Rito) Voiced by: Akeno Watanabe
- A 15 years old high-school student who has a big crush on Haruna Sairenji. His father is a manga writer and is very different from Rito in both looks and personality. Rito's mother is a fashion designer and a scout for models who is often away from home; he seems to take after her in looks, though her personality is equally as odd as her husband's as she has a tendency to start sizing women up with her hands. Rito used to be on the soccer team in junior high, but he quit because he was constantly helping his father with manga. His younger sister Mikan comments he's very good at "useless little things" like crane games. Rito shows signs of developing deeper feelings to Lala throughout the story.
- Lala Satalin Deviluke (ララ・サタリン・デビルーク, Rara Satarin Debirūku) Voiced by: Haruka Tomatsu
- Princess of Deviluke. Ran away from home so she doesn't have to get married. Uses many self-made inventions. At first she was pretending to love Rito to keep from getting married, but eventually she fell in love with him. Lala isn't shy at all, infect she doesn't care if she gets naked infront of Rito. She has physical abilities far beyond that of a human and also has a distinctive tail coming from her back (which is very sensitive).
- Haruna Sairenji (西連寺 春菜, Sairenji Haruna) Voiced by: Sayuri Yahagi
- One of Rito's school mates and object of Rito's affection. Haruna has similar feelings for Rito. She lives with her older sister in an apartment and has a severe fear of ghosts and supernatural things. When frightened she has a habit of grabbing Rito and using him to bat away whatever nearby is scaring her.
- Golden Darkness (金色の闇, Konjiki no Yami) Voiced by: Misato Fukuen
- Called Yami-chan by Lala; an assassin who does not show a lot of emotion, hired by Lala's fiance candidate Lacospo (ラコスポ, Rakosupo). A running gag in the series often finds Rito accidentally groping her as a result of some other incident. Since she has stated that she hates "ecchi" people, this results in Rito getting beaten up. Very similar to Eve from Black Cat in appearance and ability. Recently, she is suspected to have developed some slight feelings for Rito and seems to refrain from attacking him with her ability to transform her hair into pointed objects, in order to kill him. Instead, she substitutes with a large metal fist. She likes Earth clothes
- Mikan Yūki (結城 美柑, Yūki Mikan) Voiced by: Kana Hanazawa
- Rito's independent and reliable younger sister, Mikan takes care of the house while their parents are away on business. In contrast to her older brother she is very mature for her age and grade though she doesn't hesitate to tease him.
- Ren Elsie Jewelria (レン・エルシ・ジュエリア, Ren Erushi Jueria) Voiced by: Fuyuka Ōura
- A childhood friend of Lala, infamously known for wearing girl clothing during his play dates with Lala. At first he arrives on Earth to win back Lala, but soon becomes jealous due to her relationship with Rito. Due to his pursuit of Lala, he accidentally gives Rito his first kiss. However, while the male Ren regretted this, it had an unexpected consequence towards his "other side". As Ren is from Planet Memorze (メモルゼ, Memoruze), he can change gender in both mind and body upon sneezing; as a girl she goes by the name Run (ルン). Run is in love with Rito and blames Lala for all her problems, while Ren is in competition (albeit rather one sided) with him for Lala's hand in marriage.
Minor
- Gid Lucione Deviluke (ギド・ルシオン・デビルーク, Gido Rushion Debirūku)
- King of Deviluke, emperor of the galaxy, and father of Lala. Despite his immense power, he has the physical appearance of a child and is a huge pervert. Lala claims the only reason he wants her to get married is so he can hand over his throne and be free to pursue his perverted hobbies.
- Zastin (ザスティン, Zasutin) Voiced by: Takehito Koyasu
- Lala's personal bodyguard and the best swordsman of the planet Deviluke. He is currently Assistant Chief to Rito's father who is a manga writer due to an incident caused by Lala. He bears a passing resemblance to Creed Diskenth from Black Cat. Despite his skill with a sword, he has a horrible sense of direction, resulting in him being constantly lost (another running gag in the series). He is often on the receiving end of many negative events or on-goings in the series (such as, all ways being hit by on-coming trains; yet another gag in the series), and seems to have some very bad luck, all together.
- Mikado (御門)
- The school doctor who also happens to be alien (she has pointed ears). She dresses rather provocatively even when on the job and helps out aliens on Earth in various manners, usually those dealing with medical care.
- Saruyama (猿山) Voiced by: Hiroyuki Yoshino
- Perverted male best friend of Rito.
- Lisa Momioka (籾岡 里紗) Voiced by: Ryōka Yuzuki and Mio Sawada (沢田 未央) Voiced by: Chiemi Chiba
- Mischievous best friends of Haruna.
