"Endless Love" was a 1981 #1 hit single, recorded by soul music legend Diana Ross and pop singer-songwriter Lionel Richie for the Motown label. Thirteen years later, it was covered by Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey for the Epic Records label.
Original version
The song was the theme for the movie of the same name starring Brooke Shields. While the movie bombed, the song became the biggest-selling single of the year landing at #1 on Billboard's Pop, R&B and Adult Contemporary charts, staying at #1 on the pop side for an impressive nine weeks. The soulful composition became the biggest-selling single of Ross' multi-dimensional career while it was one of several hits for Richie as the 80s progressed. Ross recorded a solo version of the song for her first RCA Records album, Why Do Fools Fall in Love? but the famous version was her last hit on Motown.
The song was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for Richie, and was the second song that Ross was involved that was nominated for an Oscar.

Cover version
Fourteen years later, the song was covered by Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey, retaining virtually all of the same elements of the original version. This new studio recording was co-produced by Carey and Walter Afanasieff.
Chart Success
Carey's prior single, "Anytime You Need A Friend," became her first single to fail to make the Top 10 of the Hot 100. "Endless Love" became a return to form for Carey as while it did not hit the top, it was able to make #2 and continue her streak of airplay successes, as with the singles from Music Box, it made her one of the most played artists on the radio during 1994.
For Vandross, the song marked the first time he had been on the US charts since 1992 and it became the biggest hit of his career, having never gone higher than #4 on the US charts with a previous release. His album Songs benefited as a result and went onto achieve Double platinum certification.
While it was able to debut at a relatively high #31, it only remained in the Top 40 for 13 weeks. Also, the single went on to achieve Gold certification. Across the globe the song was also quite successful reaching #3 in the UK and Australia
Awards
"Endless Love" was nominated for the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals, but it did not win.
