Characters

Acadieman

The first Acadian superhero, he is the "official" pirate of the French language. He loves "the great indoors" and hates walking long distances. Coffee makes him strong, similar to the effect of spinach on Popeye. He likes hanging out in coffee shops and laughing at people while spoiling himself.[2]

Other characters

A few characters appear regularly on the show:

  • Ti-Gris
  • Coquille
  • Farty
  • Johnny Dieppe
  • Acadiemère

A few other characters have been only in a single or a few episodes. These include Anna (a satire of Anne of Green Gables) and a mutant potato who have appeared in the 4th episode "Le tourisme," in the first season.

Controversy

While the Acadieman comics and cartoon are popular among young Acadians and anglophone New Brunswickers as they have a hero to whom they can relate, and that speaks the same manner, the reaction is not so positive among school teachers and even some of the Acadian intelligentsia. They say that the series promotes a "bad," "corrupted" French in a time when Moncton Acadians should protect their language from overwhelming English influence. These critics are sometimes parodied or made fun of in the cartoon. Some others (mostly young, urban Acadian artists) say that it is Chiac that makes Acadians special, setting them apart from anglophones, but also from other french-speaking nations.

Catch phrases

Acadieman's catch phrases include:

  • "That's weird"
  • "Y'va pas faire beau dans la cabane"
  • "WooHoo!"
  • "Ok, that's it... that's all."
  • "Holé!"
  • "Slack a 40!"

Upcoming

Dano Leblanc (creator of Acadieman) is negotiating with Rogers Television for a third or fourth season. The DVD of the second season will be in stores by mid-December 2007.
