Patrick Henry High School, first opened in 1966, is a four-year comprehensive high school accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and is in its 38th year of operation. The 57-acre campus includes a counseling center, child development center, computer and science labs, a newly remodeled auditorium, library and drama theater. Patrick Henry is a member school of the National Association of College Admissions Counselors and complies with the NACAC statement of principles of good conduct.

Patrick Henry was the first of only a few high schools in the San Diego area to have a smoking section.

Patrick Henry participates in the Voluntary Ethnic Enrollment Program (VEEP) whereby approximately 600 students travel daily from a minority community and are regularly enrolled, full-time students. The ethnic composition of Patrick Henry extremely diverse, representing more than 20 ethnic groups, PHHS is composed of approximately 48.8% White, 29.4% Hispanic, 10.4% African-American and 11.4% other ethnicities

Patrick Henry High School was designated a California Distinguished School in 1999. In 2000 and again in 2003, Newsweek Magazine listed Patrick Henry as being among the top one percent of high schools in the nation. The 2005 Academic Performance Index (API) continues to rise and is now 748 (an API of 800 is the target). PHHS teacher Erin Mangahis was named a 2006 San Diego County Teacher of the Year. The school continually under performs at math, as most students are only in 'grade level' classes.

Drug bust

On January 4, 2007, a sting operation was conducted at both Patrick Henry High School and University City High School. Between both operations, 15 students were arrested for selling drugs to an undercover officer who had posed as a student during the first semester. From the two schools, undercover officers bought a total of 6.3 grams of marijuana, 5 ecstasy pills, 6.4 grams of psilocybin, and 12 prescription pain pills. Two of the students arrested from Patrick Henry are 18 and will be tried as adults. The recent drug sting and introduction of a drug sniffing dog on campus are the result of a perceived increase in drug use by students attending the school.
