Federline and Spears

Britney and Kevin: Chaotic is a limited reality television series that stars pop music singer Britney Spears and husband Kevin Federline.

Series

The series includes five episodes that debuted weekly every Tuesday at 9PM ET/PT on UPN between the dates of May 17 and June 14, 2005, with re-runs appearing on MTV. Both Federline and Spears are credited as executive producers.

The show consists largely of home videos created by Federline and Spears, along with some added commentary, beginning with their courtship during the European leg of Spears' "Onyx Hotel Tour" in Spring 2004, and ending with their marriage that September.

Episode 1 - "Can You Handle My Truth?"

The first episode involves Spears casually playing around with a new camera, occasionally focusing on other people, but largely keeping the lens on herself. She regularly asks anyone and everyone about their opinions on sex, love and marriage while in London on tour, mainly because she's been feeling lonely. Sometime during the second half of the special one-hour premiere, Federline makes his entrance into the series, and Spears often mentions bits about their sex life.

The episode pulled in an audience of about 3.5 million viewers between the ages of eighteen and forty-nine, which is nearly double what the time slot on UPN usually gathers.

Episode 2 - "Who Said Anything About Love?"

Similar in subject matter to the first episode, we find Spears performing more shows for her "Onyx Hotel Tour", while at the same time bonding with Federline. Spears' bodyguards accept Kevin for who he is and decide to lay off him. The episode also includes a scene that reveals Spears is quite afraid of flying, based on a fear that she'll crash as she did in a similar incident sometime earlier in her life.

This episode only netted an audience of below 2.97 million, which is a significant decrease compared to the premiere.

Episode 3 - "Scared to Love You"

In this episode, we find that Spears and Federline's relationship seems to be deepening, even to the point where Britney reveals that she loves Kevin. However, after Kevin fails to respond the same, Britney closes up somewhat about her feelings and confides to the camera for comfort.

In a continuing trend, this episode pulled in an even smaller audience than the previous, with numbers below the 2 million mark.

Episode 4 - "Magic Happens"

After an enjoyable day in Paris, Spears realizes that Kevin is truly "the one" for her, so she ends up proposing. Federline accepts and the couple discusses their relationship after a little mishap at a Swiss border crossing.

For the first time, this episode showed an improvement in ratings compared to the previous.

Episode 5 - "Veil of Secrecy"

In this hour-long series finale, we find out just how Britney and Kevin's wedding went down last September at Studio City, California. We see that all of their family and friends, including thier parents, had no idea that they were actually going to attend a wedding; they had all thought it was just an engagement party. At the end of it all, Kevin expresses his love for Britney through a heart-felt sentiment.

After this episode ended, the video for Spears' single "Someday (I Will Understand)" made it's world premiere.

Unfortunately, the episode was only able to gather an audience of about 2.1 million.

Reviews

The reviews for Chaotic mainly leaned toward the negative, and blasted Spears on her strange behavior and childish attitude. Many labeled the show as a random home video that was not only boring, but at times disgusting. One example is when Spears zooms in on her acne and comments on her pores, and when she licks the camera and comments on how it tastes like rattlesnake. Others, however, gave Spears credit for giving fans a welcome peek into her private life. Despite the fact that the series was compiled of standard home videos, it did provide a look into a more goofy and fun Britney than fans had yet been able to witness; more down-to-earth and silly than the Britney-image fans were accustomed to. It was also the first means by which America was able to learn more about Kevin Federline, including a biography segment during the second episode on May 23, 2005.

Theme song

The theme song to the series, appropriately titled "Chaotic", is performed by none other than Spears. The track was recorded during the sessions for In the Zone.
