The F-4EAT was a 4-speed computerized, electronically controlled version of the 3-speed Ford ATX transmission used in the 1984 to 1994 Ford Tempo and Mercury Topaz and the 1981 to 1990 Ford Escort and 1981 to 1987 Mercury Lynx. It was produced by Ford Motor Company from 1991 to 2003. It is also called the F4A-EL by Mazda and Kia.
It was developed mainly for the 1991 to 2002 Ford Escort and the 1991 to 1999 Mercury Tracer but was also used in the Mazda Protege and Kia Sephia. It was only different from the ATX by having full computer, electronic control and a fourth gear overdrive which the plain ATX lacked. The add of electronic solenoids to this version of the ATX provided more power and more controlled shifting. The CD4E developed in 1995 for the Ford Contour was a higher output version of the F-4EAT. Both the F-4EAT and CD4E were updated to the 4F27E for the 2000 up Ford Focus with the Zetec engine and Duratec engine.
