"Piece of Me" is a song written by Christian Karlsson, Pontus Winnberg, and Klas Åhlund and recorded by American singer Britney Spears. It is the second single from Spears's fifth studio album Blackout.
The track was released for radio airplay on November 27, 2007 in the U.S.[1] and November 29 in the UK. It is also gained airplay on radio stations across the world. In conjunction to the heavy radio airplay, the single has so far become a top thirty hit in the United States, a top ten hit in Bulgaria, Sweden and Canada, a top five hit in New Zealand, a top two hit in the UK and a number one hit in Ireland.
Background and composition
"Piece of Me" was written by Swedish songwriters Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg and Klas Åhlund for Spears' fifth studio album, Blackout. The song was recorded in response to the constant media scrutiny and sensationalization of her private life. Swedish pop singer Robyn features on backing vocals and the track was produced by Bloodshy & Avant who had previous work with Spears' Grammy Award-winning single "Toxic".

"Piece of Me" is a pop groove written in the key of E major.[2] It is composed in common time: in 4/4 count.[2] The melody runs through a downtempo dance beat, and highlights loud '80s-influenced synth and sexy vocal sample.[3] "Piece of Me" is introduced by a sludgy bassline, and Spears' voice is heavily synthesized[4] and constanly shifts in pitch.[5] The track consist of over-the-top vocal distortions which caused a split sound effect, confusing the listener into which voice is the real Spears.[6] It has a dominating sounds of squelching series of beats and bleeps, introduced in the beginning of melody. Background vocals for "Piece of Me" were performed by Robyn.
"Piece of Me" is constructed in the common verse-chorus pattern. The lyrics are written like a biography retelling Spears' mishaps, sung in nearly spoken manner.[3] "Piece of Me" starts with a pre-verse before its main verse. The chorus repeatedly ask "You want a piece of me?" which slighty changes in melody to "You wanna piece of me?".[7] There are also rhyming lyrics of "rich and famous" with "shameless" in the chorus. The producers chimes in when she sings "Extra! Extra!". A new pre-verse and verse is created after the first chorus.[8] The bridge follows after the second chorus using the same lyrics in the first pre-verse. "Piece of Me" ends in a repeated chorus.
Reception
Prior to the release of Blackout, "Piece of Me" was amongst the most critically praised and recommended of the album's tracks and became a fast favorite of reviewers.[9] More recently, Entertainment Weekly has praised the "Piece of Me",[10] as has Billboard, notably saying that "the song drips and drools '80s synths, alongside a drowsy midtempo clip, as Brit sings in a heavily layered near-monotone."[11] Bill Lamb from about.com wrote that the song is brilliant, and is one reason to listen to Blackout.[12] New York Times defined "Piece of Me" as: "[a song] introduced by a sludgy bass line, Ms. Spears waxes defensive, in a heavily synthesized voice that's the main (and sometimes only) instrument."[4] Rolling Stone referred to it as "tabloid-bashing banger" and a "must hear song",[13] while including it in their annual "100 Best Songs of the Year" at number fifteen.[14] Digital Spy noted that the song's "fat, squelching series of beats and bleeps", is "an electro-thudding cry of defiance".[15]
Chart performance
"Piece of Me" charted on digital downloads alone upon the release of Blackout. It debuted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 at number sixty-five,[16] as well as at number thirty-seven on the Canadian Hot 100.[17] After the release of the music video, the song climbed up the charts. In its eighth week on the Hot 100, "Piece of Me" rose to number twenty-one.[18] Despite falling to number twenty-eight, the song was still bulleted, and rose to number twenty-three the next week. "Piece of Me" sits currently at twenty-three, after moving up five spots from last week.
In the UK, "Piece of Me" debuted at number sixty-nine on December 24, 2007. It then climbed to number two, prior to its physical release; this made the song more successful than "Gimme More", which peaked at number three. The single entered the Irish Singles Chart at number twenty-four, and reached the top spot on January 12.[19] It became her seventh Irish number-one single, tying with Madonna as solo female artist with the most number ones in the country. "Piece of Me" has also reached the top ten in Bulgaria and Sweden, the single's first appearance.[20]
The single debuted in New Zealand at number thirty-four. It moved up to sixteen the next week and one week later it charted in at nine. It currently sits at number five, surpassing Gimme More, which peaked at number fifteen.[21]
"Piece of Me" has gained 426,000 points in the United World Chart and has so far peaked at number twelve.[22]
Music video
The music video[23] was filmed on November 27 and November 28, 2007 at an exclusive Hollywood nightclub and restaurant, Social Hollywood, and had a budget of US$ 500,000[24] compared to her previous video, "Gimme More", amounting to US$25,000. This was the most expensive Spears's music video since "Toxic," which had the budget of $1,000,000. It was directed by Wayne Isham, who had previously worked with Spears in the video "I'm Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman" and in the international Pepsi commercial campaign in 2002. On November 30, 2007, the "Britney Spears Wants a Piece of You" contest was launched in which fans can make videos of "Piece of Me" themselves using MTV.com's Video Remixer. The winning video aired on TRL on December 20. MTV, Jive Records and Spears herself chose the winner.[25]
The music video begins with a group of ruthless paparazzi taking pictures outside a residential area where various blonde girls are changing clothes and playfully dancing. Spears is then shown in front of a multi-colored illuminated background wearing a brown-fur vest, black bra, and destroyed jeans. Scenes with Spears tearing negative tabloid covers down and creating positive ones are interpolated throughout the video. Spears later joins the other girls who have changed into matching blonde-bob wigs, dark sunglasses, and black trench coats as they enter a car being hounded by paparazzi. The girls make it to the party and exit the car in different clothes. Spears is wearing a sequined purple dress and Kimoto styled jacket. Inside the party a rouge paparazzi joins the girls in the bathroom and Spears finds out he is a pap. She writes “sucker” on his forehead with red lip-stick and begins to dance with her friends in the bathroom. Lastly the girls are seen back at the apartment watching an entertainment news show where the “Britney invasion” from earlier is reported. The final scene shows a close up of Spears’ face smirking.
The video came in two versions: USA Version and International Version. The International Version included scenes of Britney with a short blonde wig at the beginning. The USA version excluded the wig scenes. The videos both included the same video effects, though.
On December 13, 2007, People, Us Weekly and ABC posted a small preview of the video on their websites, and it was confirmed on the Canadian music countdown show MuchOnDemand that MuchMusic would premiere the video on Monday, December 17, 2007. As previously announced, the video made its world premiere on the ABC news magazine 20/20 on Friday, December 14, 2007, and became available a few minutes later on Spears's and MTV's official website and also on her official YouTube channel. The video was then premiered on TRL on December 19, 2007. The video cuts off the repeated chorus and the repeated line at the end of the song. The video was released to the U.S and UK's iTunes Store on December 23, 2007. Since its release, the video has peaked at numbers one, two and three in the Canadian, U.S., and UK iTunes music video charts, respectively. The video debuted on VH1's VSpot Top 20 Countdown at number twenty on January 4, climbing to number two in the following week[26], making the video more successful than that of "Gimme More", which peaked at number ten in November.
The music video was well received by both critics and fans. Bill Lamb from About.com wrote that "Spears is at top again and that this video brings memories from the 90's ...Baby One More Time and from 2004's Toxic"; he also said "the video is just brilliant so is the song."[27] Other reviewers stated that "Piece of Me" shows a piece of the old Britney and that it was just perfect for her career."[28]
To date, the "Piece of Me" music video has received over 12.5 million views on YouTube. The music video became the top seen music video in a week on YouTube history beating Justin Timberlake's previous record[29], Spears account is also on the list of the top seen profiles of all-time in YouTube[30], her music video "Piece of Me" became the most seen music video for the month of December and as of January 18 its running for most viewed video for the month of January.
The video has also currently reached number two on VH1's Weekly Video Countdown (as voted for on VH1.com) and number eight on Total Request Live.
Artwork
There is an alternate cover for the CD single which features images of Spears's fans making up the main image of Spears in a montage form. Fans that had signed up for Sony BMG UK Britney Spears updates received the e-mail which read, "We’re going to create a mosaic montage picture of Britney made up of all your pictures so that you can be a piece of her". The cover was revealed on 4th January, 2008. [31]
