    How do you make pages about someone in the WIKIPEDIA?

    You will need to first register an account, which has many benefits, including the ability to create articles. Once you have registered, please search Wikipedia first to make sure that an article does not already exist on the subject. Please also review a few of our relevant policies and guidelines which all articles should comport with. As Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, articles must not contain original research, must be written from a neutral point of view, should cite to reliable sources which verify their content and must not contain unsourced, {{{}}}negative content about living people.
    Articles must also demonstrate the notability of the subject. Please see our subject specific guidelines for people, bands and musicians, companies and organizations and web content and note that if you are closely associated with the subject, our conflict of interest guideline strongly recommends against you creating the article.

    As Master of Puppets has said, you must create your own account first. If the person is popular, whether it be of an important theorem, a hit record, or being a prominent politician, then you can start their page by typing their name in the search box to the right. If the search box brings you to a page, then you will not need to create the person's page, and you may just edit it (with or without an account; if the page is protected, you must have an account). If the person's page is not there, then you can just type in a few things about them, but you must include why they are important. (See WP:NOTABILITY). If you type in a page about yourself, a friend, etc. then expect it be deleted, because Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a personal website (See WP:What Wikipedia is not).     Using “*” or space after a category

    To list items in top left of category, I noticed sometimes a “*” after a category such as in “Category:Museums in the United States|*Curators” & sometime a space is used such as in “Category:Museums in the United States| Defunct”.     The space is probably a mistake, but the asterisk is used to force an article to the top of the category listing - usually the main article and/or a list of examples (for instance, I went to Special:Random/Category, which gave me Category:Godchildren of members of the British Royal Family, which has listed under * the article List of godchildren of members of the British Royal Family).     See Wikipedia:Categorization#Priority sort keys and Help:Category#Sort order. There is no fixed rule about using space or *. Some categories have articles with both and then space comes first, for example in Category:Suspension bridges. It's possible to use additional characters for more groupings, for example + and -. They are displayed in ASCII order as shown at Help:Category#Sort order where many special characters come before digits and letters. If an article happens to start with a special character and doesn't change its own category sort order then it's listed normally under that character, for example *-algebra in Category:Abstract algebra.     Wrong

    I just wanted to say that i saw the ADD definition and part of it is wrong. It is not a genetic disease and also you can get ADD without being exposed to anything toxic or bad for you and also you can get it without damaging your head by falling or something. I have ADD and i am up set because i didn't get it by any of the reasons that were listed. I just got it, nothing happened to me, i never was exposed to anything, i never have/ had fallen on my head or damaged it, and neither of my parents have it.     Neither Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, ADD, or ADHD predominantly inattentive are semi-protected or protected, so you should be able to edit them. Your ability to post a question here shows that you are not blocked. You may want to bring this discussion to the talk page of the relevant article, as I'm not sure which article you're referring to, and ADHD appears to have a full range of citations throughout the "Causes" section.     (edit conflict) I notice you have already attempted to correct the Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder article. Please note such claims need to be backed up by citing references from reliable sources - without this, your change is likely to be reverted quite quickly. If that happens, it would probably be best to take your concerns to the article's talk page, rather than simply re-adding your information. Also note it is not necessary to leave your signature in the article itself (I have removed it for you), but if you leave a message on a talk page, then please do use the signature.
    Whilst, the article's factual accuracy is disputed, it suggests that genetics plays a role in around 75% of cases, whilst injury/toxins play a role in around 20% of cases. That leaves around 5% of cases with possibly unexplained causes (though I have not read all of the article).

    Why is it taking so long to POST MY PAGE to the public?

    I'm afraid we can't do that. First of all, since Wikipedia is a wiki, you can post articles on your own - you do not have to request that it be done for you. Secondly, your article appears to be an autobiography, which are strongly discouraged on Wikipedia. Writing an article about yourself means that you have a conflict of interest, which will affect the neutrality of the article and may make it difficult to determine if you are in fact notable enough to be included. Thirdly, your article contains no references or citations to reliable sources to help verify the information you have included. You are welcome to include information about yourself on your userpage as you have done, however in an actual article, we'd prefer you not. If you believe you are notable enough for inclusion in Wikipedia, you may request an article be created by an experienced editor.     YouTube videos on Wikipedia

    No, for several reasons. It is possible to embed malicious code into a video, causing security issues. Doing so would greatly increase article size and cause accessibility issues. However, the main reason is that YouTube videos are generally not considered to be reliable sources, and so aren't usable as citations.     Infobox Water park template

    On template:Infobox Water park, how do I change the template so that if “location3” is filled out on the template, the information displays on a second line when the article is viewed.     It's normal line wrap when the whole text doesn't fit on one line. You can avoid risk of line wrap between two words by replacing space with &nbsp; (see nbsp). In Adventure River it's in a wikilink so you have to pipe it: Replace location3 = [[United States]] with location3 = [[United States|United&nbsp;States]].     I don't recommend trying to automatically avoid line wrap for unknown names. There might be long names where line wraps are natural and line lengths would become too varying without it.     Image licence

    I uploaded Image:Bernhardt Skull.JPG, which is just a crop, into landscape, of Image:Sarah-Bernhardt (Hamlet).jpg, which is a commons image.

    However, I've got a problem with the licence. The commons image is licenced death of creator+70 years, whereas that's not an option at special:upload on wikipedia (which has an option for death of creator+100). Looking at the DoD I'd say this difference is actually an issue. I've put a licence on there pro tem so that I can bring the question here to the help desk, but how should this be dealt with? Should I upload to commons not to wikipedia? Or is there an appropriate licence I'm missing? AndyJones (talk) 08:19, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Another image licence question

    Completely unrelated to my preceding question, I see from my watchlist that a bot is trying to delete Image:Richardthird.jpg. However the book in question was clearly printed 1597 and is therefore in the public domain, and the image shouldn't have been given a fair use licence in the first place.     How can I find out when a particular article was first posted on its Wikipedia site?

    I have looked at the history, but I don't know if any of it has been archived, or if I am seeing the entire history.

    How do I tell the age of the page?

    Click history at the top of a page. Then click earliest and you will be at the first ever edit to a page. Page history is not archived as for GFDL copyright reasons, we need to preserve the authors. See Help:Page history for more information. Woody (talk) 13:06, 24 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    Some related links: Special:Ancientpages (it only goes back to 2004, which makes no sense), and History of Wikipedia mentions the oldest edit which is still in an article history. One possible complication when you are trying to find the very first edit to an article: if an article was deleted and then someone recreated it later, I don't know if the earlier deleted history will still be visible to non-admins.     End of article not showing up, but text is still there

    I edited the Anderson County, South Carolina article. I added a Reference section an external links section. After I saved it, nothing after this last reference is showing up. But, if I go back to "edit this page", the all of the text is still there (Meaning I didn't accidently blank the last part of the article) What is up with this?     See WP:BIO for the "notability" requirements for a person to have a Wikipedia biographical article. If you satisfy those requirements, you can help Wikipedia editors write about you by giving us some reliable sources for your biographical information.     Layout of wikipedia suddenly looks strange

    I'm not sure what I did, but en.wikipedia looks very strange. There are no tabs at the top of the page. It's like the css isn't being applied at all! Other websites look fine in my browser (Firefox 2), and even other parts of wikipedia look fine, like fr.wikipedia. When I view source and compare en.wikipedia's header to fr.wikipedia's header, they look the same.

    Did I somehow change a setting? How do I fix it?

    Did you clear all files (not just refreshing the viewed page)? I don't use Firefox and cannot give browser specific help. Have you considered creating an account?     Yes, I did clear the cache. I shouldn't have to create an account to have wikipedia appear as it normally does, and I'm suspicious that it won't work anyway.     An infobox would/should automatically align itself to the right. Inside the tags {{}}, you'd have something like: {{|right}} - which may align it. It depends on the template itself.     It looks like you created this on your user page, which shouldn't be linked to from other existing articles. Quickly glancing over it, I don't know if meets the requirements for notability, so it may get deleted if you make an article out of it. It is also is more of an advertisement than an article.     That is pretty amusing. For things like that, where you can link to an actual diff, you might want to keep the link somewhere in your userspace. (The reason BJAODN got in trouble was because a lot of its content didn't provide a way to determine the author of the content - such as a diff, a big copyright problem.)     Hi there! Page revisions are usually not hidden from normal view except in extrainous circumstances. Wikipedia:Oversight states that these cases are:
    1. Removal of nonpublic personal information such as phone numbers, home addresses, workplaces or identities of pseudonymous or anonymous individuals who have not made their identity public.
    2. Removal of potentially libellous information either: a) on the advice of Wikimedia Foundation counsel or b) when the subject has specifically asked for the information to be expunged from the history, the case is clear, and there is no editorial reason to keep the revision.
    3. Removal of copyright infringement on the advice of Wikimedia Foundation counsel.

    Why are advertising pages not deleted, even if it is clear that they go against the Wiki Perennial Proposal?

    I know of a company, which created a page exclusively to advertise their capabilities....I saw that they have been tagged beginning three months ago. Is there a law that prohibits people form deleting a page? How do you prove that the page is against the Wiki law...How does this work?     Ahh, i see, i misunderstood slightly. I would say, when in doubt, cite another source. Any verification, even biased, is better than none.     Query

    My lecturer at College (Syd Moore) has asked me to help her create her own Wikipedia page.

    She used to have her own program on Channel 4 and worked for a big publishing company, she has a brother in a band and they have a wikipedia page, she is linked from there but of course has no page for it to be linked to.

    I was just wondering how this could be done as she has told me that her friends have tried to do it, but it just gets deleted a few days later and isnt a proper page.

    She is interested in having a wikipedia page as she has just recently been part of a magazine, which she helps to run, and wishes for all of her achievements, facts etc. to be on this page for people to access and view.

    It's fair that registered users who are registered under blocked shared IP addresses cannot do things that only registered users can do, such as create pages, move pages, upload images, and edit semi-protected pages.     how can one contact the contributors (I assume they are more expert than I in the field they choose to contribute to) and ask about gaps in articles users see - while letting them choose whether or not to plug those gaps?

    for example, I go to the zinc page, I see a problem and I want to raise the issue without fixing it because I am not the expert - but also, the way you edit pages is not really straightforward - you have to click on discussion, then edit this page, then find the bottom of the previous criticisms (constructive or otherwise) and then make your comment - so you really need to want to make a comment - it should be much more straightforward. Also, a page might have ten contributors - who takes responsibility for responding to any one comment? (as you have done above Pat?)

Discussion/talk pages are for when an editor would like to raise an issue... you don't really need to read absolutely everything... you don't even have to read anything at all.     Wikipedia does not have a site specific search feature that can be embedded in external webpages. However, you can create a google custom search engine that will search wikipedia.     While clearing detritus off my watchlist, I found several entries for recently deleted articles that I have no recollection of ever having seen. I certainly don't remember doing anything (such as adding speedy delete templates) that would have added them to my watchlist. The mystery additions to my watchlist were Illannoy, Illinois, Land of Satan and Shithead people!, and Illinois Stinks!.     You must cite to reliable sources verifying the information and which are independent of the subject. This can be citations to books, newspapers articles, magazines, television and film treatment and so on. Since Wikipedia is a tertiary source, all information in it must synthesize already published material. Nothing new should every be announced in an encyclopedia. There are other articles about ajim in other languages such as French but despite this French doesn't appear on the left side where other languages are listed.     yes, have a look at the bottom of the source text of another wiki - there u will find a list like [[en:ajim]] Easiest way is to copy these links. dont forget to remove the english one, if present and add one for the language where u picked the list from.     Each Wikipedia has a two-or three-letter language code (see m:List of Wikipedias for a list). To do interwiki links, type [[language code:article name in that language Wikipedia]]. For example, [[de:Hauptseite]] brings you to the German Wikipedia's main page. Meanwhile, interwiki links to the same language can be done as well; [[wikt:Main Page]] makes wikt:Main Page which brings you the the main page of the English Wiktionary. See Help:Interwiki for more.     Playing Ogg audio files

    I can't play Wikipedia Ogg audio files (as for example appears in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromatic_scale). My operating system is Windows XP 2002 SP2, my browser is IE7. I have the latest versions of Windows Media Player, VLC Media Player and Java installed. I have followed the instructions at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Media_help. I can play all audio & video files types (e.g. mpeg, WMV, ...), except Ogg files, from within my browser. I can play all downloaded audio and video files types by clicking on the files directly within Windows Explorer, including Ogg files. When I click on buttons linking to Ogg files within Wikepedia the image of the button disappears and no sound is played. I can't see this problem in the FAQs.

    Hi Primehunter. Yes, I followed instructions from step 2. Also when I clicked on the 'more' link and it said that Quicktime ActiveX was selected but it would not play using that player. I've just tried (for the first time, didn't do this before) selecting the VLC Active X player, and this plays OK. Still don't understand why the Quicktime player or windows media player doesn't work (my WMP will play Ogg files if directly clicked). Anyway, I'll consider the problem solved. Thanks.

    Cross-ref Wiki subjects to the Dewey Decimal System?

    Dear Wiki folks,

    What is the relationship, if any, between the Wiki categories and the Dewey Decimal System?

    I have a broad set of data and images which I am trying to index using the Dewey Decimal system. I thought that I could find a cross reference from a Wiki category (e.g. National Flags ) to a Dewey Decimal entry. I cannot find any such x-ref on a Wiki page. I also used various Wiki and Google searches on "flag", "state", "nation" and "vexillolgy" together with "Dewey Decimal" but without success.

    Of course I could just dump my data under the Dewey entry "320.1 The state" but I'm sure there's a better way to do this.

    Please advise.

    Somebody has posted my personal information on wikipedia.

    Somebody has posted my name and age and some false information on wikepedia and the article has been removed, but the content still appears on google underneath the link. I'm slightly angry because when anybody searches for my site this article appears at the top in google and it won't go away.     You could wait for it to go away. Google seems to re-index Wikipedia pretty frequently, and will most likely notice soon that the article has been deleted; shortly thereafter, it should disappear from search results. You could also try contacting Google, although I'm not sure how helpful that will be; it seems as though you can only request removal of sites which you own, or report blatant spam. I'm sorry about the invasion of your privacy. Unfortunately, there is not a lot which can be done from the Wikipedia end, except to delete the offending content from WP's own site. --Kateshortforbob 20:00, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    It should not be a problem at all. Assuming you never plan on using the other account, there is no issue with you registering a new one. Consult WP:SOCK for further information, as it says there, sockpuppets are only against policy when you plan on using an additional account deceptively or to get around guidelines.     I assume the article you mean is Alice and olivia. It needs a lot of work - the tags added by another editor are meant to indicate that so that people can improve the article, and you should probably leave them there until the issues identified have been resolved. You can click on links in the tag to see how you can fix the problems. I've restored them for now. I'll explain a little bit more on the article's talk page when I'm done here.
    Secondly, on Wikipedia, there's no rush (we even have an essay about that!). The previous article was deleted as advertising. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and doesn't do advertising, so if your "asap" is promotional, then you might need to look somewhere else.     Template:Triple image

    At Tyrone_Wheatley#Oakland_Raiders, the {{triple image}} template is suddenly not working after working for several days.     The template history shows it hasn't been edited since the 3 creation edits in mid-december (apart from one cat-add edit during this convo), the earliest diff shows that px was always autofilled in so was never required in the size field. It's only dependency - {{!}} has also not been edited since March 2007. What may have happened is that it was interpreted incorrectly by the wiki software up until now and that a recent edit to the source code fixed it (possibly).     My edit work does not show up to other users/other computers

    Dear Wikipedia/Wikipedians,

    Hello there, I am a new Wikipedia user and have recently edited the page TTDI. Initially, my edits showed up in that page but subsequently when I made further changes under the section "Places of Interests", I realised that these changes do not show up in other public computers or in my other internet browser. It is only when I click on "edit this page" or "history" and revert back to the article then the changes will be shown. The changes are also shown when I log in with my username and password. However, when I clear the cookies in the browser and search for that article again, the same thing happens i.e. no changes at all.

    Therefore, I am wondering if I didn't get anything right or if i violated any laws.

    I don't fully understand the problem you described, but I find that WP:PURGE very often corrects situations such as these.     I looked in the page history and didn't find any examples of people reverting your changes, though I didn't look at everything in detail. If people do revert your changes, you can discuss it with them on the article talk page, which is here. Could you give an example of something that's not showing up? Sometimes a newly edited version of a page doesn't show up for a few minutes because the Wikimedia computers are being slow. If that's not the problem, you can try bypassing your browser's cache. I added a <references/> section to the article, but it doesn't look good, because it just says "TM3" and doesn't say what it means.     I have tried the method which "The Fat Man Who Never Came Back" i.e. WP:PURGE and it works wonders. From my beginner's or basic understanding, i think this matter came up due to Wikipedia routing the original page(in abbreviations) to it's full name(in a different page.     In for example http://en.wikipedia.org/enwiki/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&offset=20080116045614&target=Seresin, the first 12 digits is YYYYMMDDhhmm (year, month, day, hour, minute) of the most recent displayed item in UTC (Wikipedia standard) time.     creating a page

    PLEASE HELP!!! This site is driving me NUTS!

    I am trying to create and ENTIRELY NEW ENTRY for the known artist Josh M Rosenthal (who shares the same name with many other Josh Rosenthals).

    I began by running a search, of which no pages came up, excepting a page that had been deleted and looked like it was a personal page.

    HOWEVER the work I did, the research and all articles, and entries I referenced by way of link to the original source.

    NOW I HAVE A SCHEDULED FOR DELETION on the page?????????????

    You say in [6] that you are the subject. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged. Also see Wikipedia:Notability (people), Wikipedia:Verifiability, Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. The current article is far from satisfying Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Redirecting to a non-existent article [7] doesn't make sense so it was correctly reverted. It doesn't matter that there was once an article about another Josh Rosenthal. Has anybody claimed this is a problem? If the subject is better known as Josh M Rosenthal then the article could be moved to that name, but there is only a single (unrelated) Google hit on the name [8]. Anyway, my ex screenname here was chaingun, which is a particularly lethal type of rapid fire automatic weapon, formerly known as a mini-gun. But that is all in the past now, I have been reborn, trial by fire and all of that. I happen to know a great deal about shamanism, psychopharmacology, pharmacognosy (the study of the medicinal properties of plants and a great deal of other subjects which might be of interest to your readers. I also told the founder, whose name I forget that I would send him a check in partial compensation for being an intermittent asshole, which I intend to make good on, the check that is. What I don't know much about is online flirtations. I am very much struck by the author of your lead author on shamanism and psychopharmacology, who is an information technology and privacy (ironic I know) specialist in British Columbia. If you could give me some pointers on how to get her email address so that I might send a polite letter of admiration, I would not only appreciate it, but would promise to behave, send the check, forget about military hardware and the DOJ and whatever other form of abasement you might desire.     Starting a new page on a topic that already has the same title (but a different subject)

    I want to create a new article about a famous American spiritual teacher who died in 1973 but was very influential. There is already a wikepedia article with his name (Swami Rudrananda), but that article refers to a completely different person (from Indonesia) who shared the same name. Do I write my article about this Amercian teacher as an edit on the same page as the other person with the same name, or is there a way to start another page with the same title?     Alerts to national bias?

    Can someone please advise me as to whether there is an accepted means of alerting readers/editors to bias based on nationality? I have looked but have found nothing as yet.

    I raise the question because of the many cases I've struck of, in particular, American bias in subject histories, etc. This distortion is understandable given the large number of Americans using Wikipedia, and my query isn't meant to be insulting.

    Rather, is there a simple way of flagging this common problem and of encouraging qualified persons to try to remedy it? (I am seldom qualified to do so myself.)     We have quite a few templates for tagging articles that appear biased. We have Template:Unbalanced and Template:POV. Perhaps most relevant here is the Template:Globalize/USA which you can add to the top of any article. Additional useful templates can be found here. You may also want to raise the issue on the article's talk page or bring it to the attention of an active project.     No, you necessarily don't want to go to AIV, except in very specific cases. AIV is not for content disputes but only for clear-cut vandalism, for which the vandal has been warned repeatedly. Instead, I would try writing a note on the user's talk page asking why the information is being removed. It's possible the user believes he/she has good reason for its removal (e.g. reasons relating to our policies on Biographies of living persons. Or it could be the user is unfamiliar with our policies of WP:NPOV and WP:V. Perhaps you should inform the user about these policies. If the user will not engage in discussion but continues to remove well-sourced information, don't revert war-but bring the the concerns to the attention of the community using the three-revert rule noticeboard or even the incidents noticeboard.     Maybe by "website" you mean the page Martin Garbus, and by "flagged" maybe you mean the neutrality and grammar tags. A quick look at the page tells me that the section headings need to be changed to mostly-lowercase according to Wikipedia's manual of style. I read a little of the page and it does not seem to me to have a neutral tone -- I wouldn't remove the neutrality tag. It sounds too much like an advertisement for Martin Garbus. I see that your username is similar to that of the subject of the page. However, there is a page called Insurance, and if you go there, it has quite a long history section in its table of contents. I hope this is helpful.     I have uploaded photos I have taken myself earlier and had no problems and no comments. Now I have uploaded a couple of screenshots taken myself and I have a lot of comments from the robot.     Well... If that article still existed you could move it to the right name. But the article was deleted because it had no assertion of importance. There are tens of thousands of bands. You just put [[Category:Larger category]] on the category page somewhere to make it be contained in the larger category. That's all you have to put. The way I usually do it is I put the reference in between ref tags <ref> </ref> at the place where I want the superscript, then have a references section that just says <references/> . The footnotes are then generated automatically using the information from between the ref tags.     Insert a picture.

    On January 27, 2008, I was attempting to insert a picture that I have taken with my digital camera. I have it uploaded. It is called Open Mouth.jpg. As you may guess, I was trying to insert it into the article called Mouth (human). But no matter how I tried, I could not insert it. Can you please tell me how to do so?     You attempted inserting the correct code on your third edit ([[Image:Open Mouth.jpg|thumb|A human mouth, open]]) but you were placing the image inside the infobox, rather than into the article. The infobox, as far as I'm aware, can only take one image. If you try again, do so outside the infobox and you shouldn't have a problem. I feel bad saying it but I feel compelled to mention that the image is really very blurry, and thus I'm not sure if it's useable.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:29, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    You are inserting it in a gallery. In this case you should omit the usual square brackets and the |thumb parameter. This worked fine for me in preview mode.     Template formating

    Need some help regarding the {{UStaxation}} template. There are a few areas in this template that use a show / hide feature. However, there is an issue with the text size on these headers. The text size looks correct at 110% on IE and Firefox but looks correctly sized at 100% on Safari. Since the top headers use a different class then the lower ones, I'm not sure what the deal is.     That looks pretty good - better than before. In this one, it looks the same in Firefox and Safari but slightly smaller (compared to the top headers) in IE, but not enough to be of concern.     infobox image placement interference

    This is a problem with how floating elements work in almost all browsers. It is quite annoying to be honest and proof that much of the CSS styling was tacked onto tables and other HTML with little regard for how stuff is supposed to work. It was solved for the Article Message Boxes (cleanup and deletion templates) after much CSS and HTML testing. I guess we could fix it for pictures and infoboxes if we put some significant amount of time and effort into it, and it would require a Mediawiki software update... --TheDJ (talkcontribs) 20:23, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    I fixed it by reversing a recent change in the NFL player template that had introduced two stacked right side infoboxes, instead of one.     Wikipedia's strict definition of "fair use"

    I'd like to use the following image on Wikipedia. [14] I uploaded it, but it was deleted under the claim that it violates copyright.

    The image is derived from two sources:

    • This image held by Wikimedia, under the GFDL
    • A Chinese propaganda poster from the 50's, photographed by Michael Wolf, licensed to Taschen, which I then modified using photoshop. So it is itself a derivative work.

    Both images I got from Wikipedia, but the second image I have been unable to find.

    Because my image is a parody (and a political one at that), there's no non-free equivalent, and doesn't harm any outside business (it's the cover of Taschen's book on Chinese propaganda), it definitely falls under the legal definition of "fair use."

    However, Wikipedia policy as it's worded now is more strict than the actual law on fair use:

    For purposes of this policy "non-free content" means all copyrighted images and other media files that lack a free content license. Such material may be used on the English Wikipedia only where all 10 of the following criteria are met.

    1. No free equivalent
    2. Respect for commercial opportunities.

    4. Previous publication
    5. Content
    6. Media-specific policy
    7. One-article minimum
    8. Significance
    9. Restrictions on location
    10. Image description page

    The law states that those ten criteria must be generally met, not that they all must be completely met.

    Yes, Wikipedia's Fair Use policy is more strict than the American Fair Use law. But the Foundation has demanded this to be as sure as possible that we don't get sued over anything. You are welcome to try and change the rules, but I have little hope that you will succeed.     It’s not just a concern over law suits: The more important purpose of the non-free media policy is to discourage non-free images—maximizing the reusability of Wikipedia content. Some Wikipedias do not allow any non-free images. So the English Wikipedia policy is a compromise.

    Wikipedia is run almost entirely by volunteers. There are only around a dozen paid staff, while there are millions of volunteer editors (over 6 million, plus however many edit without an account). So, if you see an error or another problem anywhere on Wikipedia, you can either fix it yourself, bring it up on the article's talk page, ask an editor who has previously worked on the article to fix it, or mention it on a discussion page such as the village pump.

    Regarding my previous comment on Wikipedia which i've cancelled.     I'm not sure quite what you're suggesting. My guess is what you're looking to do is create a new WikiProject, in which case the page I linked you to has some advice. If you are, you'll want to figure out before proposing it exactly what the WikiProject would do. A WikiProject that is of interest only to a very small number of people or that duplicates already existing projects won't be very successful. Also, I'm not sure what you're referring to with projects attempting to disrupt Wikipedia; I've never seen a WikiProject as a whole being disruptive, though individual members might be occasionally.     Problems logging back in

    Hello, I having problems logging back in. My user name is Rocketmaniac. I tried to go to my watchlist, (I had selected "remberber me") but it made me log in again. I didn't remember my password, so I did the "Email new password". After getting the email, I tried the confermation code, but it said wrong or invalid code. (I cut and pasted the code so to not enter it wrong). Now what do I do? I tried "email new password" again, but only 1 emailed password in 24 hrs.     "E-mail new password" should send a mail called "New temporary password for Wikipedia", containing a password to be entered at Special:Userlogin. But you speak of a confirmation code which is what you use to enable email for an account as described at Help:Email confirmation. The confirmation code is clicked, or copied to your browser address bar, and mine came in a mail called "Wikipedia e-mail address confirmation". Could you be mixing the two concepts?     To enlarge the font size on Wikipedia pages (or any page for that matter), you'll need to change your browser settings. For Firefox, this can be found under View -> Text size. To get a version of a Wikipedia page that is better for printing, use the printable version. You can access the printable version by clicking the Printable version link in the toolbox on the sidebar, or by adding &printable=yes to the end of the URL. The printable version will print links as well, but they won't be colored blue. Of course, you won't need to click on them when they're on paper, anyway.     If you're using the default Monobook skin, it's not necessary to use the "printable version" link for printing, see Help:Printable.     Joining a WikiProject associated with the article (for example, the History WikiProject would be a good WikiProject for WWII). Also, you may stub or categorize the article accordingly, so that if an editor is looking for an article of that subject they may find it. I find WikiProjects to be the most effective, personally, as you're in touch with other editors every step of the way. If an article is in disrepair, templates such as {{unreferenced}} may help attract attention; for example, to get attention for sourcing use a template at Wikipedia:Template messages/Sources of articles, while a pure cleanup request could consist of a template from Wikipedia:Template messages/Cleanup.     There was once a template {{Improve}} which added Category:Pages needing expert attention and this box:
    But that could be said for most articles as argued at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2006 September 22#Template:Improve. Unless there is something really bad like legal problems, please don't be too aggressive in attempts to get attention for specific articles by notifying others. Template tagging and a relevant WikiProject is usually OK but you asked for the most effective way and that would probably involve an inappropriate number of posts scattered over Wikipedia.     Wikipedia 'Home Page' error?

    The Home Page describes Wikipedia as a 'Free' Encyclopedia. The description is in many languages and as far as I can tell (English, German, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish) the English colloquial 'Free' is used in the sense of 'without charge' or 'costless'.

    Am I wrong, or are not the words used in the other languages words that mean more in the vein of 'liberated' or 'having been released from prison' than 'costless or gratis'? Do the words freie, libre, vrije, libera, fria, livre translate in this way or do they not have more to do with liberation, release or escape?

    For example, in German, the word 'Freiheit' is literally the English 'Freedom' as in 'let freedom ring'. Should not the word 'Kostenlos' be used rather than 'Freie'? In a German pet shop, when birds are on sale 2 for 1, the second bird is not 'frei' unless he escapes out the door.

    I am not a native speaker in these languages but as I recall, of the ones I have studied, they do not use the literal translation of the English 'free' to mean 'without monetary cost'.

    I know no one is going to try and tell me that the English 'Free Encyclopedia' means that this encyclopedia is more liberated than others. That can well be argued and in all probability is true, but when any American reads 'Free Encyclopedia' he has only one thought: Freebie!!

    Hmm, excellent point. The Spanish 'libre', as taught to me, can apply to free consumables and the like, but the point you raise about the German form seems valid. However, in the Rammstein song Feuer Frei the article states that the literal translation is "fire free", so I'm not sure. I'll be sure to ask a German editor as soon as I can.     Thanks for the Main Page FAQ link. Seems like I'm not the first to ask this question. I don't like the answer they give, but I don't want to get nasty and I don't want to go into the amount of research it would take to refute the claim that the Main Page use of 'free' is correct. I think the Japanese have made their decision by, as was remarked, using the borrowed word to avoid having to make a choice as to what the meaning of the word 'free' is in the Main Page context.     Sortable list

    I would like to be able to sort Köchel catalogue#List by all columns. Currently, rows are stored in chronological order. Therefore, it would be perfect if clicking on "Date" just reset the list to how it is stored. Is that possible?     Related question: I just noticed that the same table doesn't sort correctly by the first column. E.g. "Anh. 218" is listed before "Anh. 191", with several empty cells and other other names in between. Is that a bug?     Which is more important, information or references?

    I see that Wikipedia wants references and not original research. This is easy if you want to write about a person or city.

    How about Patronymic? This article is very informative. But it's entirely original research.

    It's often hard to tell whether unsourced content is original research. The history of Patronymic shows a lot of contributors so at least some of them were probably working from reliable sources.     Besides, every judgement we make in Wikipedia is based on opinion. "Use common sense"... if it is not referenced, then encourage others to add references. It does not mean that the entire article is "useless" because the references were not provided before. It means the article is still being developed to achieve our Wikipedia goals. As long as the information seems reasonable and can be judged to be written by people who understood the article, there is no problem. If you read a claim in the article that looks dubious or really does need a quotation to avoid looking dubious, then either removing the information or adding a {{fact}} template might be required.     Populating a Category

    I am having problem in populating a category Duplicate Articles. Problem is i am trying to populate it using the template {{Duplication}}, I have added the category code in the template but the category page isn't populated still.     You can write {{tl|Duplication}} to link to a template. I have fixed your post which linked to the article Duplication. 1) You added <includeonly>[[Category:Duplicate Articles|{{PAGENAME}}]]</includeonly> inside a noinclude part so the category is never added. 2) After a template has added a category, articles which use the template must be edited in order to update the category with the article.     Wikipedia is not search-friendly.

    I am a huge Wiki fan. The amount of time I spend browsing Wiki is beyond compare. However, I am not too happy about the search friendliness of Wiki. For instance, Wiki is not friendly when it comes to mispelt words. I had trouble searching for Johan Cruyff once. It would be extremely helpful if Wiki could give alternate spelling suggestions or closest entries on searching.

    It would, but unfortunately at the moment that kind of feature is not available in MediaWiki (the developers are kept quite busy). However, there are a few things you might be able to do - first, Google has a spelling suggestion feature like you describe, and it's possible to restrict searches to Wikipedia by including the keyword site:en.wikipedia.org in your search. (Incidentally, the use of the word wiki to refer to Wikipedia is generally discouraged, because if any wiki can be called Wiki, it's the original WikiWiki.)     On your talk page I can see two warning messages. One is about an article you wrote that got speedily deleted, the other about an image that had the same fate. It is possible that you were not logged in, and your IP address matched that of someone who was previously warned for vandalism.     Your IP address is considered confidential by Wikipedia so we cannot check that this is what happened but it sounds likely.     Interesting questions. Since paper is made from wood, it darkens over time for the same reason that wood does. A substance called lignin darkens with exposure to light and air.     Something wrong with Template:Pakistani Cities

     – Fixed template to remove dependence on an old parser “misfeature.”

    There appears to be something wrong with the Pakistani Cities template,for instance looking at the Rawalpindi article, it displays the Coordinates as 33|36|00|N|73|02|00|E|region:PK_type:city|display=inline,title. That is, the raw wiki code is visible in the article itself.

    Can someone fix this.

    San Diego County Fair

    I am the Internet Marketing Specialist for the Del Mar Fairgrounds and San Diego County Fair. We want to thank the person(s) who wrote the original article on the San Diego County Fair. We have found it to be accurate and objective.

    I have edited portions of the San Diego County Fair article to bring it up to date and to correct the titles of a couple of our exhibits. However, I find that I am unable to edit the opening paragraph, which states that attendance has risen to a "high" of about 1.2 million "in 2004." We set an attendance record in 2007 at 1,265,997, did in fact, beat the record set in 2004. You can verify this on our Web site:

    We would like you to change that sentence, or, if you prefer, substitute the sentence "The San Diego County Fair has been among the top ten North American fairs in attendance for the past decade."     Wiener Singakademie

    Hi, I wonder if someone could provide me with a quick answer to the following question. I have just created the page Wiener Singakademie following a request at AfC. This is the name of a Vienna choir. I just wondered if it was standard practice to anglicise a name if possible (in this case I'm guessing "Vienna Singing Academy") or to leave it as the original.
