The Cherusci was a nation inhabiting the Rhine valley and the forests of western Germany (near modern Hanover) during the 1st century BC and 1st century CE. They were first allies of, and then enemies of, Rome. They are most famous for the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, when a Cherusci army under Arminius annihilated three legions under the command Publius Quinctilius Varus. The Cherusci leaders were called "Drighten" or "warlord".
