Pontoon Beach is a village located in Madison County, Illinois. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 5,620.
Geography
Pontoon Beach is located at 38°43'34" North, 90°3'38" West (38.726078, -90.060505)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 21.9 km² (8.5 mi²). 21.2 km² (8.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.31% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,620 people, 2,134 households, and 1,519 families residing in the village. The population density is 265.3/km² (686.9/mi²). There are 2,341 housing units at an average density of 110.5/km² (286.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 87.72% White, 8.88% African American, 0.55% Native American, 0.78% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 1.33% from two or more races. 1.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,134 households out of which 38.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% are married couples living together, 16.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.8% are non-families. 22.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.06.
In the village the population is spread out with 28.2% under the age of 18, 11.0% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 8.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.9 males.
