Ross "The Intern" Mathews (born September 24 1979 in Mount Vernon, Washington) is an American television personality known mostly for his role as a correspondent for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. A former intern on that show, he is referred to by Jay Leno as "Ross the Intern". Mathews is openly gay.[1]

Early life

Mathews grew up in Mount Vernon, Washington, and is a graduate of University of La Verne in La Verne, California. He was a communications major[2] and successful speech and debate competitor.[3]

Career

Mathews has been a regular on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno since December 2001, covering movie premieres, the Academy Awards, two different Winter Olympics Games and countless other events. In addition to his role on The Tonight Show, Mathews also writes a daily blog, at www.nbc.com/rossblog, and produces and hosts an upcoming web-show on nbc.com with Tonight Show announcer John Melendez, tentatively titled The John & Ross Show.

Mathews has contributed commentary to the E! networks various 101... specials.

He has appeared on a number of reality shows, including the the 2003 incarnation of the reality television show, Battle of the Network Reality Stars, in which he was a member of the Red Team. He also appeared on the fifth season of VH1's reality television show, Celebrity Fit Club. During the course of the show, which premiered in April 2007, Mathews lost more than 40 lbs. and helped his team win the grand prize. After the final episode of Fit Club aired, Mathews revealed his weight to the public for what he said was the last time, which was 164, down 50 pounds from his original 214.

Mathews was a guest host on The View July 17 2007, one of the very few men to sit on the panel. Former co-host, Rosie O'Donnell is Mathews' mentor, according to the Celebrity Fit Club finale.

Mathews appeared as a celebrity mob member on seven episodes of NBC's prime time game show 1 vs. 100 in early 2008.[4]
