In the study of cryptozoology, cryptids are animals or creatures that have been hypothesised to exist, but have not been proven to, or animals presumed extinct (known as relicts). Their presumed existence is often derived from anecdotal evidence and/or other evidence insufficient to prove their existence with scientific certainty. Cryptids may also be known as Unidentified Mysterious Animals, or UMA, an intended variation on the term UFO.[citation needed]
