Modest start for enMAV

One screen, one foundation: try to write one "transwiki-ready?" screenful to start with.
One sufficiently rich, flexible and expressive presentation that is friendly to any viewer.

Local policy for contributors?: Should page be only about the general character of enMAV,
and not expend any of its space addressing the individual lexical issues,
insofaras this is possible (viz., past tense modals and the seriously anomalous)?
These could be left for the moods invoked and the relevant Wiktionary denotations (all linked from here).

  1. Ruakh is right to suggest MAV split into MAV (MAV has minimum §1&2 from enMAV) and enMAV. Talk Ruakh, others.
  2. Section 1: Ask Ruakh to do this.
  3. Section 2: Do a 3? row table, as roughly sketched below.
  4. Section 3ff: Further "editable" sections follow loosely after these.

section 2

The initial eleven (and most common) English modals or modal auxiliary verbs are below.

.
will shall may can strong present tense forms
would should might could gradiently weak past forms
do must ought (to) anomalous forms
.
. functional description for links above:
  | 3row TABLE: Each MAV pops 6way disambig choice (rev1=2way: enWKTN & enGM) |
  | 11 MAV ids pop inline navig help: enGM | GM | GMod | enLang |
  | then new tab/window (default) hi-lit enWKTN | WKTNs | Langs |
.

The words dare and need were used as modals in the past. They appear less often in contemporary English.
Please look in any good dictionary (or in enWKTN) to look at the standard functions that these verbs perform.

Modal do is often called a dummy modal. It is the most anomalous member of the modal auxiliary verbs,
serving as an auxiliary verb for the purpose of forming interrogatives, pronominals (pro-S) and providing emphasis
whose scope covers the entire sentence. All the other auxiliaries also perform in these last three roles.
