Palermo Metro
The Palermo rapid transit system is handled by the Italian State Railways and comprises of two subway lines.
History
The first part of the Palermo metro is the actual Line B, opened in 1990 one month before the Italy 90 world soccer championships. The line had 6 stations: Centrale, Vespri-Policlinico, Notarbartolo, Imperatore Federico-Stadio, Fiera, and Giachery.
The first two stations of the second line (today renamed Line A) opened in May 1993: San Lorenzo-Colli and Tommaso Natale, and two further stops were opened in 1994: Francia and Cardillo-Zen. In 2001 the line was electrified and extended to Punta Raisi airport, and the new stop Palazzo Reale-Orléans was opened.
The old trains were replaced with new "Minuetto" trains in 2004.
Existing tracks
Lineas A and B are actually operational, and extensions of both lines are under construction. Plans for lines C and D are in the process of being defined.
Travel tickets cost EUR 1 for a single ride and last 120 minutes.
Line A has 14 stations: Stazione Centrale, Vespri-Policlinico, Palazzo Reale-Orleans, Stazione Notarbartolo, Francia, San Lorenzo-Colli, Cardillo-Zen, Tommaso Natale, Isola delle Femmine, Capaci, Capaci-Torre Ciachea, Carini, Piraineto, and Aeroporto Falcone-Borsellino.
Trains run from 4:45 AM until 10:00 PM towards the airport, and from 5,30 AM until 11:00 PM towards Palermo's central train station, 7 days a week.
Line B has 4 stations: Stazione Notarbartolo, Imperatore Federico-Stadio, Fiera, Giachery. Trains run from 6:40 AM until 8:40 PM, on working days only.
Future Plans
Work is already in progress for the extension of Line A by adding 9 new stops: Roccella, Brancaccio residenziale, Guadagna, Palazzo di Giustizia, Lolli, Lazio-Restivo, Belgio, La Malfa, Sferracavallo. The rail tracks will be doubled, in order to increase train frequency between Orleans and Carini where actually trains run on a single railway track. Railway crossings will be replaced with underground tunnels and bridges.
Work is partially in progress to extend also Line B by building 4 new stops: Porto, Politeama, Malaspina-Catania, Lazio-Libertà.
Plans for Lines C and D include driver-less trains connecting Notarbartolo station to Oreto and Mondello respectively.
