Cabot Circus, formerly Merchants Quarter, is a shopping mall situated in Broadmead, Bristol city centre. Cabot Circus is due for completion in November 2008[1]. Cabot Circus will be one of two major shopping destinations in the Bristol area, the other being The Mall, Cribbs Causeway.
Apartments
In addition to the 120 retail outlets, Cabot Circus will feature 200 luxury apartments and will open in Autumn 2008[2].
History
Cabot Circus was named after John Cabot, following a public vote taken in November 2007 after the name Merchants Quarter came under criticism due to its associations to the slave trade[3]. Work began on the site in September 2005[4] following the approval of the planning permission in December 2003[5]. The design of Cabot Circus consists of six retail environments with a individual section allocated for apartments. The central point promotes the shopping centres glass roof.
Retailers
Cabot Circus will feature one anchor store with fifteen additional major stores. The anchor store will occupy four storeys of the building. Currently, House of Fraser and Harvey Nichols are confirmed tenants of the major stores. In addition to this, Apple have announced the opening of a new store in Cabot Circus[6]. French Connection, Hugo Boss,Lacoste and Oakley are among some of the designer outlets who will occupy space in the new shopping centre[7][8].
Cabot Circus will also feature the first Showcase Cinema De Lux in the United Kingdom with thirteen auditorias.
Transport
Cabot Circus has its own car park, set for completion in August 2008 that will comprise of 2,600 car parking spaces. Bristol Alliance along with Bristol City Council have announced a new park and ride scheme that will run from Frenchay to Cabot Circus from November 2008 to coincide with the opening of the shopping centre[9]. This is in addition to the current park and ride schemes currently in operation.
