The environment here is too hostile and there are only a handful of remaining active editors, who are interested in maintaining quality and integrity of Slovakia-related articles. On the other hand, their diligent and patient work is the very reason why I have decided not to leave Wikipedia completely. Instead, I am going to limit my presence here to random maintenance and occasional writing. I do not intend to waste my time communicating with evidently disruptive users or posting on those fancy yet useless administrators' noticeboards. So, please do not ask me to do it on my talk page or anywhere else. I am not interested. |

Revision as of 00:11, 17 April 2008
Since 2005, I have made significant contributions to hundreds of articles about Slovakia and I was happy to see some of them on Wikipedia's main page, either as "Did You Know" or featured articles. In April 2008, I almost left Wikipedia altogether. The main reason is that the community failed to prevent a user that should not be named here from editing in a disruptive way[1][2][3][4], from attacking other editors both at talk pages and in edit summaries[5][6][7][8][9][10], and from propagating ethnic stereotypes in a way bordering hate speech.[11][12]. I do not have time to write new articles (the activity I have enjoyed the most here) if I have to revert Nmate's uncivilized "nomad intruder Slav tribes" to the previous version "Slovak inhabitants" three times a day. Communication did not work because it is hard to deliberate with a person, who for some unknown reason believes that the "whole Slovak history" is so short that it "can be sent as a text message". I got also disappointed by the fact that no administrator has been able or willing to prevent another user that I should not name here from hungarizing English geographic names despite the existing rules.[13] I am also too tired after all my fights with another user, who reverts even simple copyediting if it comes from an editor that he does not like (including myself).[14][15]
Wikipedia is a voluntary project and we are all motivated by some enjoyment taken from our creative work. For me, that enjoyment is gone, destroyed by few obnoxious chauvinists. This type of users is reappearing again and again, the banned User:VinceB and his sockpuppets being the most famous example. It is just too exhausting to deal with them. Several valuable editors have already left Wikipedia for this reason. For example, see [16]. I wish I was more interested in writing about Iceland or any other country that is not part of the imaginary Greater Hungary. It would be surely much more pleasant.
