The 2008 888.com World Snooker Championship is taking place between 19 April and 5 May at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield. John Higgins is the defending champion.
Notable happenings
- Debutants at the Crucible this year were Jamie Cope, Liu Chuang and Liang Wenbo.
- Steve Davis became the first player aged 50 or over to play at the Crucible since Doug Mountjoy in 1993.
- The 2007 finalist, Mark Selby, was knocked out in the first round by qualifier Mark King 10–8.
- Matthew Stevens's 10–5 first round defeat to John Higgins was the 1st time he'd ever lost in the 1st round.
- Ding Junhui's 10–9 first round victory over Marco Fu was his first ever win at the Crucible.
- Ken Doherty's 10–5 defeat to qualifier Liang Wenbo consigned him to dropping out of the top 16 of the World Rankings for the first time since the 1992/93 season.
- Ryan Day reached the quarter-finals for the first time in this tournament by beating the 2007 champion, John Higgins 13–9.
- Stephen Hendry reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 2005.
- Liu Chuang dropped off the main tour as a result of his defeat in Round 1 by Ronnie O'Sullivan
- Stephen Maguire won the first sessions of his 1st and 2nd round matches 8–0 against Anthony Hamilton and Neil Robertson respectively.
- Debutant Liang Wenbo fast became a crowd-favourite when he accidentally entered the arena with the match officials during his match against Ken Doherty and had to quickly scurry back to be introduced. He also sat down after taking a shot during his Second Round match against Joe Swail not realising he had fluked a red into the corner pocket.

Qualifying
The qualifying rounds for the tournament took place in Pontin's Prestatyn, Wales between 6 January and 11 January 2008. The final round of qualifying took place at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield between 7 March and 10 March.
