"Mona Leaves-a" the nineteenth episode of The Simpsons' nineteenth season that aired on May 11, 2008.[1] It is to guest star Glenn Close in her third and final appearance as Mona Simpson, and Lance Armstrong as himself.[1] The episode features the death of Homer's mother, Mona Simpson. The episode is dedicated to Elsie Castellaneta.
Plot
The episode opens up with the family shopping at Springfield Mall. Marge reveals that instead of a "fun" trip, she merely brought the family for sweaters. Although Homer, Bart, and Lisa bombard Marge with requests to go to different areas, Marge pressures the family into doing something Maggie wants, and agree to go to "Stuff and Hug", a workshop to create stuffed animal. When Bart, however, finds a bear that records his own voice, he decides to humiliate Homer. Homer, enraged when all the bears start insulting him, begins attacking all the bears in an angry fit, prompting Marge to immediately take the family home. Upon arriving home, the family discovers their front door is open, giving them the idea that a burglar had entered the house. Homer takes a brick tied with a rope called "the Defender", with the intention of attacking the burglar. However, when he smells pie in the kitchen, he hurries inside and discovers that the supposed burglar is none other than his mother, Mona Simpson.
Mona asks to get forgiven and Homer says no. Then she says that he's the most important thing in life and he still says no. Homer fills his heart with food and watches television in bed at night, when Mona asks for forgiveness again and he says no and does not accept his tuck in. Later Homer feels bad and makes her a card. He realizes she can't move.[1]That's because she's dead and they take her to a funeral. Homer feels really bad. Homer drowns his sorrows at Moe's. Homer buys a lot from the Kwik-E-Mart. Marge finds a DVD for Homer for Mona's will. Mona leaves everyone gifts except Maggie. Homer has a task to take her ashes to the Springfield Monument Park. Homer has 15 minutes to get up and almost falls but doesn't. He drops his ashes accidentally in the rocket in the computer. The men try to kill him. Homer falls on the sharp top on the rocket and falls and gets hurt.
Cultural references
The title is a reference to the famous Da Vinci painting, the Mona Lisa. This is the third Simpsons episode to be named after Da Vinci's painting, Mona Lisa, after "Moaning Lisa", and "Moe'N'a Lisa". At the end of the episode all of Homer and Mona's memories were shown with background song "Mother and Child Reunion" by Paul Simon, originally featured on "My Mother the Carjacker". "Stuff and Hug" is a parody of Build-a-Bear. Homer eats two buckets of KFC chicken: one from the 70s, and one from 2008.
