"Crawling"
Song

"Crawling" is a Grammy Award-winning song by the band Linkin Park. It is the fifth track from their 2000 debut album Hybrid Theory. It was released in 2001 as their second single and won a Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance in 2002.

A demo version of the song recorded during the production of Hybrid Theory features an interlude of Mike rapping before the last chorus.

Song Information

"Crawling" is one of the few songs on the album to contain little rapping, Mike Shinoda only has one line that gets repeated in the pre-chorus. It is also noted for its electronic synth lines, turntable scratches, and Chester Bennington's angst filled choruses.

Music video

The video was directed by Brothers Strause. It portrays a young woman's inner conflict dealing with an abusive relationship. The woman closes off to the rest of the world, represented with the special effects of crystals forming around her. By the end, the crystals recede, symbolizing her success in fighting the relationship. The band are said to be preforming in a Fortress of Solitude. This video was supposed to have a "darker" ending to it when the first synopsis was written, but Warner Brothers rejected the idea, and the final ending was written in its place.[1]

Trivia

  • The music video is the only video not included on the band's YouTube channel, with the exception of most of the Reanimation videos.
  • The girl in the video is Katelyn Rosaasen.
  • After the ice melts in the video, two of Linkin Park's four Hybrid Theory-era symbols can be seen on the platform.
  • The song was featured in Cartoon Network's advertisement for the anime series Gundam Wing on Toonami.
  • The bonus feature on the CD is the same footage that is a hidden Easter egg on Frat Party at the Pankake Festival.
  • The lyrics might also signify an effect of crystal meth in which the user has the sensation of bugs crawling in their skin which very much resembles what Chester sings during the chorus. This would make some sense as Chester was once an addict. The lyrics also describe somebody who goes through panic attacks, in which the victim, during the panic attacks, can not control whats going on, and in a way loses his/her grip on reality.
  • This was Phoenix's first video with the band. Phoenix returned to Linkin Park just before they began work on this video.
  • This song was covered by the German band Angelzoom.
  • A DVD limited edition of "Crawling" single was also released which includes a multiple angle version of "Crawling" that was performed at the Dragon Festival and four 30 seconds live snippets of "By Myself", "With You", "One Step Closer" and "A Place for My Head"
  • For live performances, "Crawling" remains one of their old songs and is still actively played.
