Resident Evil 5 (Japanese: バイオハザード5 Biohazard 5) is a forthcoming installment in the Resident Evil survival horror series for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, announced on July 20, 2005. Taking over producer duties from Hiroyuki Kobayashi is Jun Takeuchi (director of Onimusha). Several staff members who also worked on the original Resident Evil are involved in the development of the game and the gameplay system introduced in Resident Evil 4 will be used. The game will be a full-fledge sequel taking place after the events in Resident Evil 4 and is said to be a major turning point towards the series' overall storyline. A Nintendo Revolution version has not been officially announced, despite Capcom's previous exclusivity deal with Nintendo regarding the previous Resident Evil titles.
Storyline
No details has been released about the game's storyline, other than the fact that it's set after the events of Resident Evil 4 and that it will take place in a desert setting (an idea inspired by the film Black Hawk Down). The main character's identity is officially unreleased, but is agreed among the fan community that it is almost certainly Chris Redfield. An article in the August 5, 2005 issue of Weekly Famitsu suggest the possibility of the protagonist being Chris Redfield by pointing out the resemblance between the two, as well as the game's developing team comprised of staff members who worked on the first game.
The September, 2005 issue of Famitsu Xbox provided further hints of the game's character and plot. When asked whether Resident Evil 5 will provide a closure to the feud between Chris Redfield and Albert Wesker (as covered in Resident Evil Code: Veronica), Takeuchi commented that the production is in its early stages and many plot details are still in the air.
It is speculated that the game will follow Wesker's dealings and his plot to resurrect the Umbrella Corporation (as hinted in the end of Resident Evil 4).
