Mike and Ike are a kind of fruit-flavored candy. They were first introduced by Just Born, Inc. in 1940. They are fruit-flavored chewy candies that come in several colors and varieties, in essence jelly beans with a slightly more oblong shape (similar to that of Hot Tamales, another candy by the same manufacturer). They are fairly popular at movie theaters and drive-ins. There is much speculation about the origination of the name Mike and Ike.
They are very chewy and stick to teeth easily.
Mike and Ike brand candies are certified kosher by the Orthodox Union and manufactured in the USA.
Flavors
The common varieties include the "original fruits", which features strawberry, orange, lime, lemon and cherry. There are also "Jolly Joes", an entirely grape-flavored Mike and Ike candy. There is also the "Tropical Typhoon" variety, featuring orange, pineapple, strawberry banana, kiwi lime, Caribbean punch and pineapple banana flavors. The last common type is "Berry Blast," which has flavors of blueberry, strawberry, mixed berry, raspberry and wild berry.
Just recently, another flavor, Tangy Twister, was released, featuring classic flavors of cherry and raspberry, as well as three new flavors: citrus punch, pineapple, and green apple. Raspberry and cherry were also included due to their high demand and red color.
New flavors
On the Mike and Ike website, a poll was conducted to determine the next flavor of Mike and Ike that will be produced. The vote was between Lemonade Blends, Fruit Smoothies, and Sherbet. Lemonade Blends was chosen.
Discontinued flavors
"Cherri and Bubb" and "Lem and Mel" were Just Born brand candies similar to MIKE AND IKE candies produced in the 1980s, but they are no longer in production. They consisted of, respectively, cherry and bubblegum flavored candies, and lemon and melon. They were packaged in boxes with cartoon characters of the same names.
Demand
The demand for this candy has led the Just Born company to expand its franchise in order to keep up with demands. There are now more than 50 export markets, including China, South Africa, Australia, Germany and the Caribbean. The Just Born catch phrase sums up their philosophy on making candy: "A great candy isn't made...it's Just Born."
